My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
I'm in the process of getting the items on my shopping list for post op. I'm not sure how to take a shower once I'm done. Is there anything that I'm going to need for that? Do I need to purchase something to cover my incision? Thanks.

Re: My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
I had no restrictions regarding showering for my incision, which was 6 inches long from my navel into the top of my pubic hair. I was told to NOT put anything on it, and just leave it alone. It was sealed with surgical glue on top.

I was told that it was Ok to get it wet in the shower. I was urged to make sure the incision was dry by patting it dry. Otherwise, yeast will develop.

Re: My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
You don't say what type of surgery you are having .. mine was abdominal with dissolving stitches covered with what looks like a spray of lacquer/clear glue type of material
was not restricted in any way but to be honest i waited a few days before showering because I was on my own, nervous about passing out ... i used baby wipes if i went to the bathroom, also put a warm washcloth on incision, followed by regular bar soap or antiseptic liquid hand soap .. Patted dry, then blow dried with a hairdryer (as directed).
I did i not have a shower chair, but a non slip at is a good idea.. Otherwise i just shower as usual and make sure to dry the incision properly.

Re: My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
Hi, I had my TAH on Dec. 14th and really had no idea what I was getting into. Some tips I have for you...get a larger size undies I really liked the boy short briefs they never hit my incision and grew with the swelling. My incision is a bikini it was glued, I showered just like normal, but the first few days at least it is wise to have someone there with you as you are pretty weak. I just patted it dry when I was done and it was fine. The other major problem I had was it is really!!!! hard to lean over in half like if you drop something on the floor or would like to wash or shave your legs...luckily I had a great husband that did that for me the first few weeks, but if you don't have someone my leg hairs hurt and really bugged me while resting so I would say buy nair ect for that. Those are the best things I can think of that helped.

Re: My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
I have this little mesh bag that you can put all your toiletries in that you need for the shower. I got everything travel size and put it in that so it won't be too heavy. I use the dove bar soap and I put that in a little soap saver pouch so I don't drop it in the shower.

Re: My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
I had no restrictions with my stitches for taking a shower. I found it helpful to use my blow dryer to dry myself off after a quick pat dry. For the first week after surgery I lived in sleep shirts and yoga pants, I found that I hated anything elastic pushing on my belly, I also went without underwear for the first two weeks.

Agree with all the above, definately keep everything within reach, forget trying to shave legs and remember to CUT YOUR TOENAILS before your op!! :-)
Hope all goes well for you x

Re: My pre-op shopping list: showering after question
If you don't already have one but yourself a long handled scrubber to reach your legs in the shower since you won't be able to bend over for awhile. Also a shower chair would be good as well in case you don't have the strength to stand. You can sometimes rent one if needed. I'm borrowing one from my mom that she used for her surgery. Good luck.
