Sort of furious, confused, and oh yes, furious
Hello all-
I am scheduled for pre-op next week and a TAH on May 28. I don't really believe I'm actually going to have to go through with it. As I'm reading over these postings, everybody else's situation seems so much more dire than mine, or at least more justifiable (wierd choice of words, I guess) and because I fall into the category (which I think most of us do) of this being "elective," I keep thinking I am being absurd to elect to do it: "What are you DOING, girl?!"
I have no children, and I want to have a child. I've had two major myomectomies and those good ol' fibroids have grown back with a vengeance; my uterus for the past year has been the size it would be if I were permanently 4 or 5 months pregnant - and they ain't gettin' any smaller. Something i learned years AFTER the second mymectomy: each time they cut you open like that they reduce your fertility50 percent. Don't you think somebody should have mentioned that to me? Right now I'm being told that my firbroids are too big and i have too much scar tissue to support a pregnancy; I'd have to get a third myomectomy first and then I'd, well, have too much scar tissue to support a pregnancy, probably. (Not definitely, but probably; the uterus would probably rupture.)
I've been on the pill because otherwise my periods are like the Red Sea, but I'm 38 now and don't want to have to stay on the pill forever. There is a SLIGHT chance of a sarcoma; I've seen about 4 or 5 doctors and (is this a surprise?) the women doctors seem to take the sarcoma scare more seriously than the men. But it's not as if I HAVE cancer, and it's not as if the pills don't stem the red tide, and it's not as if looking 5 months pregnant is disabilitating and I might, with the assistance of 2 more operations, both of them more dangerous than a hysterectomy, be able to have a kid... so something inside of me is screaming, "You are making way too big a deal out of this, just shut up and live with your situation, don't remove your uterus over it! You drama queen!"
What is really upsetting is that when I went to see a 4th or 5th (I lose count) doc a couple of weeks ago, she told me that when I had the last myomectomy 8 years ago, that I was actually pregnant at the time of the procedure! Nobody told me that. It was right there in the pathology report (in medical speak, or I would have seen it myself, of course) and half a dozen doctors and pathologists have looked at these charts over the years, and nobody told me about the pregnancy until 2 weeks ago. Obviously it was a very new pregnancy - I hadn't noticed, although my periods were wildly erratic back then - but if somebody had come to me and said, "Hi, you're pregnant and we're about to perform a procedure that will end the pregnancy and make it really hard for you to get pregnant again, how do you feel about that?" I would have kept the pregnancy, even if it meant risking a fibroid-heavy pregnancy! So I guess overall I am feeling disempowered and suspicoius of the medical world. And I'm venting. Thanks for listening...

From what you describe of your history I dont think you should feel that this is an elective surgery. You have obviously thought it over well and done your research on the procedures. I am sorry that you are now facing this, but you are certainly not crazy for going this route.
I actually pushed for a hysterectomy. I am not one who wants to be used as human teaching/training tool. I figured it was best to eliminate the problem because it was going to do nothing more than get worse.
Look at your quality of life, and everything you have to deal with centering around your uterus. Then you can make a good decision about whether or not you need the surgery.

Actually, the term "elective surgery" technically describes nearly every hysterectomy because most aren't done to save your life, but rather improve the quality of it. I agree with HoneyRose's response too.
As far as being pregnant at the time of your myomectomy 8 years ago and no one told you until now- how new was the pregnancy? Does anyone here know if the blood test at pre-op tests for pregnancy? It's wrong if thy knew you were pregnant and operated on, causing you to lose the pregnancy.

I was tested before surgery to see if I was pregnant. Even though I told the doc that there was no chance.

So sorry to hear that you were pregnant during the procedure. Someone should have told you!
I'm sorta in the same situation - large fibroids - 39 - no kids.
I realized that I need to get the fibroids out, especially for a biopsy. I also realized I'm 39 now and I've been on Depo Provera for 3 years to control bleeding. To get pregnant may take me a year or more as I need to get off the Depo and get rid of the friboids before I could consider giving birth. Well, that would take me into my forties and I know, that for me, I don't have the energy for kids. I haven't been told that your chances are cut by 50 percent but I've been told that this could prevent my ability to conceive.
You have to do what's right for you. It's a tough decision.

I can understand you upset. However, maybe I can sort of understand your not being told, too. I mean if the doctor didn't know ahead of time, if the pregnancy did not show up on a pregnancy test and you said there was no chance of being pregnant, how was the doctor to know you were pregnant. And what good would it have done to have told you afterward? I'm with you - I would want to have known. But it wouldn't have changed anything, would it? A very sad coincidence. And from the sounds of it the chances of you carrying that pregnancy to term were awfully slim, if possible at all.
But I do understand your need to vent. I'm sorry this happened to you.

(Actually, there was no pregnancy test given - that is the part that disturbs me the most, because that either means that they were dreadfullynegligent dealingwith me, or that it is not considered routine to screen for pregnancy, which means this could be happening to other women more often than is generally supposed. If nothing else I guess I'd like to raise awareness of that so it doesn't happen to other people.)
