No hunger

Is anyone else just not hungry and not really eating? My op was on Oct 30 and I've lost 10 pounds. I've been having tiny ammts of eggs and oatmeal and chicken etc but I guess I'm just fending off that horrible gas feeling. Have you heard that that nutrition drink Ensure would help?

I went through the same. Pain meds and the fact that anesthia (sp?) can be in your system for up to 3 weeks! So it's very common. I did the Ensure drinks and Carnation Instant Breakfast to get my nutritional needs met.
And small meals are common due to all of the swelling in your abdomen; you just can't fit much. Good Luck

Yep, same here. Go slow. My surgery was Oct 31st. I haven't lost any weight though. I've actuall gained 4 lbs. LOL I was used to working out everyday or so though. So I'm sure my body is rebelling against that! LOL

I would definitely try the Ensure though to get your nutrition. good luck!

wow I was asking for food a few hours after waking up. I doubt there has been any weight loss for me. I was also given medication to take anytime I felt like getting sick, so that might be part of it too.

Its very common. I did the ensure thing and also had small meals of whatever I felt I could eat. It does get better in time.

I also didn't have much of an appetite for a while after surgery. Eat what you can. Since I'm diabetic I also supplemented at times with Glucerna (which is somewhat similar to Ensure)... a liquid meal product is a good choice to get some nutrition when nothing else appeals.

Just know that it will get better! Now I have the opposite problem with a raging appetite...LOL (maybe my body is trying to make up for "lost time" <smirk>)

I was the same. I lost 14 pounds in the first 2 weeks as I had no appitite at all. It gradually started to come back and is pretty normal now at 8 weeks post op. I have managed to lose another 2 pounds though so I am happy about that!

Hi Iona

I'm seven weeks post-op and still battling the "no hunger" feeling. Food tastes and smells funny and makes me queazy. I have lost 13 pounds since surgery. Saw my GP this week and she put me on prilosec to help with the burping which happens with everything I eat. My OB told me it couldn't possibly be surgery related, but never had this problem before.
My suggestion is to snack on healthy things such as fruits/veggies. Good luck!

All I can say is "Me, too." We must all have the same delusion, then.
