Abdominal hysterectomy recovery

I'm new to this site. I am now 6 days post op. I had an open abdominal hysterectomy. My body couldn't handle laparoscopic surgery. Surgeon took my uterus, cervix and left ovary. I'm still in so much pain. And having profuse night sweats. Then I'll start freezing. I'm only 34 and doc said I wouldn't go into menopause with one ovary, but I'm doubting him. Last night I woke up and could barely talk. Crushing head pain. My body was drawing up. Is this normal?

Re: Abdominal hysterectomy recovery

Six days is really very close to your surgery. You can feel severe pain for the first couple of weeks. Try to relax, and be sure you're taking your pain medications. It might sound odd to say, but I wouldn't worry much about abdominal pain at this point, unless you were also having a lot of bleeding or a temperature.

It does sound like you're having problems with estrogen - night sweats and headaches. I thought it was pretty typical to start younger women on estrogen close to their surgery. You might talk to your doctor about those symptoms.

Good luck.

Hi Susie 6 days post op you are very likely to start feeling just the way you are it takes time for your body to heal. A few weeks after my surgery I would get such awful headache but now two months in they have subsided. Recovery is a process walk as much as you can then rest listen to your body it will let you know when your doing to much, and your going to feel like you can get up and be your normal self but somedays it's not the case . So be patience with your self

Im glad you found us! Six days yes i was still so sore and those night sweats were day time too one minute ok next minute hotter than a furnace and dripping too! One thing i did for myself to make sure i took pain meds on time (im whimpy no tolerance for pain!) was to keep a meds journal and or list what time i took what when i ate what i ate etc just so i could stay on track and if i forgot which was often i had like mushy brain the first 8days... couldnt remember much .... Also your ovary is probably asleep right now in shock from all that messing around in there and not having your uterus to hang on to. It will wake up in time mine are starting to wake up my hot flashes and sweats are not as frequent or intense, i have never had the headache thing so the other sisters will know more than me. Sounds to me like you are doing well even though it still hurts. HUGS TO YOU

Re: Abdominal hysterectomy recovery

Hi
welcome to the site! This is an awesome resource and everyone is fantastic here.

You might want to check with your MD as the others suggested. I had my partial laprascopic a week ago, and I have been having only night sweats too. I have an appointment soon and will check on it as well. I wish you a speedy recovery! Welcome.

Re: Abdominal hysterectomy recovery

I just read an article related to this here at HysterSisters.com. It said that ovaries may shut down temporarily after surgery. Perhaps your system is just recovering from the shock.

And still, I can't imagine that just all of a sudden, your right ovary stands up and says, "Okay then, looks like its up to me to handle the load of two. Ha Ha! I'm up to the task. Never mind that I just had my best friends, Lefty and Utie, ripped painfully away from me. Now, on to making hormones. CHARGE!"

Best of luck to you!
