Swollen belly, adhesions?

It's been a week and a half since my surgery (abdominal incision). Can anyone tell me how long the swelling lasts - I feel like a stuck pig! And what are adhesions? I've seen them mentioned, but no one explains what they are.

Thanks,
Bev in Colorado

Re: Swollen belly, adhesions?

I am 6 weeks out - I was cleared to have sex today... and i STILL have the "swelly belly syndrome" Especially at night or when I overdo myself... DH is not one bit concerned about my swelly belly though - his mind is elsewhere HeHeHe

I use to have a flat tummy before this... they say it's gonna be awhile ladies so we should embrace it... I say, humph!! LoL

PS Bev: DH talked to the Dr while I took a UA for a bladder infection... They discussed the "pooch" and swelly belly... (because I am soo concerned not him) Our TAH incision is now a scar and does not have elasticity so when the swelling occurs it can not stretch like the rest of our skin resulting in the "pooch effect" but he assured us that it will subside. it will also be awhile.

Re: Swollen belly, adhesions?

Thanks. At least I know better what to prepare for. It really helps to know there are soooo many others out there going through the same thing. I can't wait till my doc clears me for sex too. Although I've got a few weeks.

Have a good one.

Re: Swollen belly, adhesions?

Thanks for the responses - so I am not a freak of nature after all I just ordered one of those swelly belly supports, since apparently it's going to be a while before I'm back to normal. Honestly, sometimes it feels like your guts are going to fall out! But you all know that...thanks for the support! Bev

Guts? What guts? I thought my guts were gone!! hehe ~*kidding*~

On a serious note, You are very welcome! Hope the swelly belly band works out for ya.. and remember to pamper the princess you only get one chance to heal... (the sisters here drilled it into me so I think I shall pass it on) so do it right!! Besides, a little TLC and pampering never hurt anyone ~*SmileS*~

Re: Swollen belly, adhesions?

You may have this swelling for awhile. I think I was able to get into my jeans about the 6 week mark which is when I went back to work and had to start wearing dress pants again. Some women it lasts longer.

Remember your insides are traumatized from the surgery and are responding to that trauma. You are only a week and a half out.

Adhesions are scar tissue that can form from over doing it too soon. Listen to your body and your doctor.

Happy Healing!!
