Im a smoker and my hysterectomy surgery is 2 days away
Im not a smoker nor have ever been. But what I can tell you is when they ask you to quit your meds and any or all supplaments or even tobacco they mean it! You dont want anything to interfere with your surgery or your recovery. I feel I need to share with you that I have lost several close family members due to lung cancer or breast cancer due to smoking. I have an aunt on my dads side who
smoked for meany yrs and got a huge tumor on her lung. She had her whole left lung removed and we nearly lost her. She preaches diligently now to please try and not smoke. There are so many wonderful help aids out there now to help you to quit. Please consider this as a time to possibly start a new path. A new you. I decided to start eating better. To make it my goal to live healthier and to be positive with my recovery. Im in my 3rd month of recovery from a total abdominal hyst. All removed including my appendix. I truly encourage you to make a new goal for yourself. To get back healthy lungs. Our bodies are truly a gift from God. Precious. Best wishes and this is an amazing site for encouragment and comfort. For questions and concerns. Lots of hugs to you and wishing you all the best from Tx.

Can you call a friend and ask her to come do something fun with you? And maybe she can take your cigarettes home with her so you can't get to them.
Also, if you do smoke, be sure to tell the anesthetist who comes to talk to you before your surgery. They need to know so they can take proper precautions.

Re: Im a smoker and my hysterctomy surgey is 2 days away
I was not a full time smoker, but did a few times a week up to a pack a week. Not bad,but not good either.I smoked every day years ago.I had daVinci and my hospital instructions were no alcohol or smoking for 24 he's before. But I made sure not to have any 3 days before.I am now 10 days post op and tomorrow will be 2 weeks with no cigarettes. You heal faster when you have smoking out of your system. It also affects breathing after because of the tube for breathing while you are under. Make sure to do breathing exercises after ,so as not to get pneumonia like I did after surgery 2years ago. Luckily this hospital made sure I used the spirometer to keep my lungs clear.I have now taken this chance to eat better.I have lost 4lbs in the past week.I am just happy that my pre cancer wasn't more than that when it went to pathology. So I want to take this time to be better to my body. Maybe this would be a good time for you to try and quit.Good luck to you!! And be honest with anesthesiologist about your habits.

I know it is your 48 hours now. If you need to and nothing helps the craving, have someone supervise you and take just a puff or two. Yes, you body will be happier if clear of smoke in the lungs, but you don't want to go in with nicotine withdrawal. Here is praying you have the same reaction my dad did - he went in for his gall bladder and the first time he lite up in the hospital (yes, they use to let you smoke in your room) he got violently ill. It was from the anesthesia and he never smoked again except an occasional pipe.
I was told no ibuprofen 72 hours before unless I had to. Tylenol and aspirin does not help the back pain, so I took it when needed.

If you were told not to smoke for 48 hours prior to surgery, that means no smoking at all, not even a puff. You could put yourself in jeopardy. Get rid of all your cigarettes. Get them out of the house, out of your purse and anywhere else you may have them. Being a former smoker I understand how difficult it is, but you need to follow your doctor's instructions completely.

Re: Im a smoker and my hysterectomy surgery is 2 days away
My dad "puffed" straws, kept suckers and regular gum handy. Friends have said cold bottled water (flavored with lemon, etc) really helps to keep them busy and from eating. Added benefit is the hydration, and it helps flush the toxins from your body faster that keep you craving.
GOOD LUCK! YOU CAN DO IT!
