Will I be able to do stairs after hysterectomy?

I am scheduled for a TAH-BS in a little over a month and am trying to get my house (and mind) prepared. What was the experience like going up stairs after surgery? My mom is wondering I need a temp bed downstairs. I've never been in the hospital before & have never had anything other than wisdom teeth taken out. I have LOTS of questions about everything!

Re: Will I be able to do stairs?

Hi there

I had my TAH-BSO over 3 months ago and wondered about stairs when I had my surgery. I remember the nurse saying, it's okay to do stairs, just not 10 sets of them. My computer is in the basement and I had my husband bring it upstairs for the first few weeks. Eventually I resorted to the basement once again. You have come to the right place to get your questions answered. Welcome to this wonderful, caring community of sisters!

Re: Will I be able to do stairs?

My surgery was Monday (3 days ago). I came home yesterday, slept off and on after settling into my upstairs bedroom (the bathroom is upstairs so this is convenient), and went up and down the stairs twice today because I missed my dogs too much to stay away. I feel fine, maybe a bit tired, but it wasn't detrimental. Really, the prep I thought I needed to do was over the top. Not much changed, BUT I am careful not to overdo anything when I question if it's a good idea or not. One note: I drop EVERYTHING! So be sure to have an extra set of hands to pick things up for you.

Re: Will I be able to do stairs?

I went up and down a set of fire escape stairs five days after surgery. It wasn't bad but it was slow going and I used the railing to take a lot of my weight and pull myself along.

Have you considered sleeping upstairs at night but making a day nest for yourself downstairs? I did this not due to stairs - I live in an apartment, it's all one level - but because my bedroom's very dark during the day. I knew I'd feel better in the living room where the south-facing windows are. I hit a sale on throw pillows at Walmart and built myself a comfy spot.

Re: Will I be able to do stairs after hysterectomy?

When I came home, I had to go up a short flight of stairs into our house. I took it slow and was fine. When I went out for walks the toward the end of the week after I was home, I again took it slow and was fine. As I healed more, I was able to go up and down them more easily. Great suggestion on creating a day nesting spot from SurprisedInNB, especially if you have a 2 story house. You most definitely are in a wonderfully supportive place to get your questions answered!

Re: Will I be able to do stairs after hysterectomy?

Always follow Dr's orders of course, but I was told stairs would be fine but to take it easy and slow and listen to my body. I am 4 days post op and I can tell you I've been doing stairs since I got home (2 story house and bedroom is upstairs). Sometimes i do forget i had major surgery and realize i ran up the stairs with no problem and other times i need to go slow and put a lot of weight on the railing and pull myself up and hold on going down. I stay on the 1st floor most of the day and created a cozy spot for myself in my living room in front of tv, on the couch with many pillows, my heating pad, water and all my meds on a table next to me. But I do still go upstairs at night to go to bed.
I guess best advice is to listen to your Dr and your body. Good luck to you!!

Re: Will I be able to do stairs after hysterectomy?

My dr told me in my preop that I could do stairs, but that I needed to hold the handrails and not try to carry anything awkward (like a laundry basket) up and down. She said that the motions of going up and down stairs would not hurt me, but falling would! I went up and down several times a day with no problem. I did not have a nesting spot or anything, as I felt great and pretty much went about most of my normal activities, I got tired, but I could make it through dinner at least before having to crash in front of the tv.

Re: Will I be able to do stairs after hysterectomy?

I would think you could go once up a day. I plan to come downstairs in the morning and then go up at night before bed. That is what I have done with my other major surgeries. Not more than that though.

Re: Will I be able to do stairs after hysterectomy?

My doctor restricted me to two trips up and down for two weeks. I did that with no issues and felt I could have done more, but didn't since the dr said not to. I has no issue with them.
