Open AND Laparoscopic hysterectomy? Did you have both?

Tomorrow will be 1 week since my surgery. Yesterday I finally got around to seeing what he did to my body. I had both procedures done, which really irks me because I don't think I would have gone through with it.

He said my cervix? was too big and he needed to finish it with a c-section. I'm a little fuzzy with everything he told me, but I go back to see him Thursday for more details.

Who has had BOTH procedures and how long was recovery? Because I'm feeling like I'm the loneliest person on the planet. And that I will never recover.

No you are not alone. I am 2 weeks post op from the DaVinci. My surgery was supposed to be 1 -2 hours and it took 3 1/2. My uterus was enlarged (14cm) but the Dr knew that before the surgery and I see other successful Laps and Divinci- with larger tumors than mine. Not sure why we are the unlucky ones! It's making my recovery VERY VERY slow. Hope we both make a quick full recovery. We definitely got double whammied.

I had a friend who had fibroids and she had a combination of laproscopic and a bikini cut because her uterus was too large to remove through the vagina. Unfortunately medicine is not an exact science and sometimes the surgeon gets in there and decides on a different course of action based on your individual problem and their own personal skill level. Even people who have the exact same surgeries have slightly different outcomes based on their personal healing ability and on their surgeons skill level. I think that's why so many women advise getting a second opinion. In my case if I had my original gyn do the surgery it would have been a TAH because of my size and her skills (insecurities?) and because my local hospital did not offer robotic surgery. So I traveled to a larger city to a gyn/onc who was very skilled with robotic surgery and got lucky. Hind sight is always 20/20. Don't beat yourself up on might have beens.

My doctor told me if he could not stretch my vagina enough to remove everything, he would cut a 4 inch incision along the bikini line. Thankfully he did not have to.

Was yours a small incision like 4 inches or a large vertical?

Yes it is a 4 inch incision.
