TAH'ers: When did you go out?
I am 10 days post op, and honestly, still spending the majority of my day in the recliner. I sleep in bed, but am very sore in the morning. I do get up to shower, walk around a bit, have gone up and down the stairs once each day for the past three days, but it wipes me out and I am pretty wobbly/dizzy on my feet.
We were hoping to take our exchange student out to dinner tomorrow night for her birthday, but we have to postpone because my husband doesn't think that I'm ready for a night out (I'm so bummed, but he's SO right).
Mentally, I'm ready.. don't get me wrong, but physically.. They'd probably have to carry me back up the two flights of stairs to our bedroom when we got home.
So my questions are: When did you start spending more time out of the recliner than in it? When did you go out of the house?

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
Hey Deanna,
I think we have communicated before…My surgery was the day before yours. I went out exactly one week later--walked around the mall for maybe 45 minutes with my husband at my side. I was definitely tired, but it was worth it to get out. My doctor told me to do what I feel like without pushing and always resting after any activity. Just listen to your body. I have no problem walking, etc. but I do get sore fast when I sit upright, like in a chair or on a stool. So for me, a restaurant would not be fun.
I truly do believe your body will give you clues as to what you can and cannot handle. DOn't push! It'll come.

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
My first out of the house was about 1 week post op. It was a car ride with DH to town and back. I was out of the recliner and in my rocker glider with footstool at about 2-3 weeks. The last two Saturday's I have went to walmart with DH. Wiped me out! I can handle going into store getting 1 or 2 items, then out of there. It seems to be taking a lot of resting time. I am at 4 1/2 weeks now. I'm getting there, but I still get very tired mid afternoon.

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
Hi Deanna..ime 4wks post op and i started walking right away post op..started out walking very slow in the house for bout 10mins at intervals through out the day..and into my 2nd week i walked outside in my yard slowly for about 10min, then slowly worked my way up to 20min as the days went by...i read in here a suggestion to not walk too far from your house in early recovery cuz u get tired so fast and remember you have to walk back to your house, so dont go too far...into my 3rd week i was walking lots throughout the day in and outside of my house and tried to walk for 20min at a time...one day i tried walking to the store and back which is about 10 blocks, and all asudden i got sharp pain and very tired, and yep i had to walk back slowly (so yep i know by experience i went too far, but really thought i could do , but couldnt) ...and as far as shopping goes i havent been in any malls, ive just gone into the grocery store for a few items...actually i remember now at the 5th day post op i had to go to store for acouple items i ran out of and i drove their which hurt alot and when i got into store and went to get my items, i found i couldnt get what i wanted cuz it was too heavy,,so i had to just buy a couple light items,,,that was kinda funny and frustrating at same time....oh ya and ime so loving my big comfy sofa chair where i sit most of the time in recline postion..i have no prob sleeping in my bed....i hope this helps u...Peace be with u

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
I spent the first 5 weeks in the recliner. Day and Night! My first outing was probably around the 2 week mark, to the doctors office for an infected incision, then again at 2.5 weeks, then again at 3 weeks.
My first actual outing was probably around the 4 week mark, dh took me to a local grocery store and we walked a little bit.

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
Two weeks after my surgery my DH took me out to dinner. He dropped me at the door, we got a booth close to the door so I didn't have to walk very far and he picked me up at the door. It was great to get out of the house! It made me feel "normal" for the first time since the surgery. Just being out for a hour or so really lifted my spirits and mentally made me feel great! Take a pain pill that won't make you sleepy before you go and you should be okay. At 3 weeks I started driving and would pick my daughter up from school. It wore me out for a few weeks but just getting out of the house for 20 minutes a day made me emotionally feel great. I would sit on the porch in the sun and feel wonderful. Remember to listen to your body and rest often. Good luck to you! You will feel better soon!

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
A friend took me out for a cup of coffee - a 2 minute drive away at about 8 days. I have to say I found sitting in an upright chair difficult. I spent most of my 6 week recovery either lying propped up or walking. Standing around and sitting seemed very uncomfortable.
Listen to your own body and don't let others dictate what you should be doing.

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
My biggest obstacle to getting out during the first couple of weeks was fear that something would happen - that I would trip on something, get jostled, etc, and that fear made me take my time. Wearing the binder really helped me feel 'safer' and at one week I was able to walk the 10 blocks to the doctor for my post-op, and walk home again. The actual walking was not the hard part, it was getting past my fears.
As for car rides - the ride home from the castle was bumpy and very uncomfortable, but as long as I took a small pillow to put between my tummy and the seatbelt, riding became very comfortable at around a week. If the trip is beyond your neighborhood, you may want to tilt the seat back to make it more comfortable.
I've seen other people on this board mention something I experienced: fast recovery and a lot of energy during the first couple of weeks, then a slump during weeks 3-4. Don't be surprised if you feel able to do something one day, but not the next. Some days I had no trouble walking in the neighborhood with DH, other days I had to keep stopping to catch my breath. One day he had me wait on a bench till he went home to get the car... and that was at a month post-op.
Get out when your body feels up to it, but as other posters have said, have an escape plan in case you just feel you need to stop and go home. And seriously, sitting upright was probably the most challenging thing for me to do over the first three months of my recovery. A lot of healing is going on in there, and it doesn't appreciate the pressure if you are sitting too long at a desk or table.
Even standing is more comfortable, so try not to get 'boxed in' to a seated situation.

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
I spent the first 3 weeks propped up in bed. The next few weeks I was still in my recliner as much as possible. I still have not driven. I went out at week 2 for a doctor's appointment, then at 5 weeks for a parent/teacher conference. I would say I have been out about 5 times the last 2 weeks, but nothing more than 1-2 hours. I am having some issues with some nerves surrounding my bladder, so at my 6 week check my doctor informed that I needed to remain on "modified rest, no lifting, bending, etc." until May 1st, to allow things to heal.
Everyone heals different. If your body says stay in the recliner for 6 weeks or longer, then do it.
I seem to be a slow healer, and am allowing my body to dictate what I do. Apparently it thinks I need to rest a lot.

Re: TAH'ers: When did you go out?
I am 15 days post-op from having laparoscopic converted to abdominal. My first outing was to the uni to pick up my grad clothing but I got around in a wheelchair. I find I have trouble walking for longer than about 5 minutes. It feels like everything inside clenches up, getting tighter the further I walk. Sitting upright is very uncomfortable, I prefer to recline a bit. It seems to take the pressure off. The doctor said to remember that there is not only the wounds on your abdomen but there is the one in your vagina as well, plus internal stitches. Take it easy and listen to your body.
