dumb eating question for pre-op planning
Hello Sisters!
Scheduled for LAVH/BSO early tomorrow morning! Ugh!
But in all the pre-planning for my family.....i forgot to plan for me!
Can anyone tell me what kinds of food I can/should eat the first few days home? Will I need to have clear liquids or eat as normal? Have already stocked up on high fibers....but how soon can I start eating these? Help please!

Re: dumb eating question for pre-op planning
I had my hysterectomy through the DaVinci method and I can say I pretty much ate whatever I wanted but in very very very small portions. When I was in the hospital I had a cheese omelet, cheerios, and some sausage which tasted like crap. LOL. Once I got home I ate mashed potatoes that really did not sit well with me (since surgery I cannot eat alot of foods with the consistency of mashed potatoes at one time or it will make me sick to my stomach) but pretty much else I could eat. I ate Ramen noodles, lasagna, homemade chicken noodle soup (more soup and noodles as I ate too much noodles at one sitting and dear Lord I thought I was going to die), roast (this was about a week after surgery), and chicken. I know I ate more stuff but for the most part that is what I ate.
I would plan for bland food for the first week or so if you have a week stomach. I would not eat alot of beef as it takes awhile for it to digest and can be rough on your stomach but everyone is different. I would start out with small portions and then go from there as well.
Good luck with your surgery.

Re: dumb eating question for pre-op planning
I'll second the small portions!
I bought a bunch of soup for lunches. I'm really liking the soups & broths, but since I LOVE food -- small portions have been the way for me. It's a nice balance between giving your stomach a break and being able to eat yummy food with the family.
Just don't forget to buy whatever your comfort food is. I like a hot peppermint tea to sip on when I'm feeling puny. That's been real nice the past few days.
I also bought Healthy Choice frozen fudge bars. I like it's a little chocolate treat at the end of a long day.
Good luck tomorrow. Let us know how you are.

Re: dumb eating question for pre-op planning
i wasn't too hungry for the first week but i did make sure i had BOOST in the house so that i was able to get some protein and vitamins in my body! that definitely helped me!!! i knew that if i didn't eat, at least i would get what my body needed!
Good luck to you............

good luck tomorrow!
I'm not sure what you meant by fiber, but be sensible...gas pain is the hardest part. I have been adding prunes to things, and that works well. Also natural yogurt (with active cultures)
Good luck!

Re: dumb eating question for pre-op planning
eating questions are never dumb. i ate whatever i wanted. by the time you leave the hosp you should be on solid foods. if the pain pills make you sick make sure to eat before you take them. i loved and still love sugar free jello with cool whip. saltine crackers with cheese and toast another major comfort food.
hope this helps.

Re: dumb eating question for pre-op planning
Thanks to all of you for these suggestions! I had a fairly light to medium supper, and I guess I'm as ready as i am going to be! Still nervous but have lots of people praying for me. RE the fiber....whole grains, prunes, and so forth, mostly things I usually have in my diet. (Also bought colace, per info i found here....just in case!) Will see you all on the other side and let you know in a few days how things went! Thanks Sisters!
