No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
Should i be worried? It's been a week and still no bowel movement. A little gas. Some rumble in the tummy, but no BM.
I've been using Senna -- taking one every night. I'm careful with it because prior to surgery I once took more than one and it was lethal.
Has anyone else gone through this? Do you have any suggestions for what will get my bowels moving again?

Re: No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
It took me about a week in a half to have a bowel movement. I finally had to take Miralax to be able to go.
Drinking plenty of water and eating things with fiber can help too. It might be wise to call your Dr. and see what he would suggest you try.
Good Luck and I hope you find something that works.

I went 10 days before my first bm. I was using stool softener, eating prunes and plenty of fresh fruit. Finally got relief by taking milk of magnesia. Now 6 wks Post op and almost back to normal. Hugs to you and wishing you relief real soon.

Re: No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
It's normal, especially if you are taking pain killers. They tend to make you constipated. It took me over a week to have my first bm as well. As all the ladies stated above, drink plenty of water and foods that are high in fiber. I ate lots of spinach and prunes. Don't get constipated.

Re: No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
It took me 8 days to have a BM and I forced it with 1/3 of a bottle of mag. citrate. I would suggest that you listen to the ladies and drink plenty of water and have lots of fiber, fruits & veggies. Also you might try adding a stool softener to your regime. The seena helps but colace or milk of mag. really helps. As long as there is gurgling things are still moving around in there so your not impacted. Good luck!

Re: No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
it took me a long time to get a BM post op, combination of the meds, anesthesia and a lot of other things. Just relax, the stress trying to get one might make you more constipated. Try prune juice and natural things, I did not want to take herbs since i was taking drugs for the pain etc.
Drink a lot of water and depending if you have been eating solid or not (I was in a liquid diet and throwing up after the op and then was not eating that much) Your body will take a bit to come around.

Re: No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
It took a full week for me. I agree with the other ladies, fiber and Milk of Mag (cherry flavor) and now on bowel regime with Metamucil alternating with MofM.
Good luck to you, it's so uncomfortable!

Re: No BM a Week After Hysterectomy
Just back from seeing my doc for my 1-week post-op checkup. My incision opened a little bit on one side, so he took care of that and prescribed some antibiotics just in case.
He also prescribed some "Golitely" for my lack of poop.
To use his words, "It's time to bring out the big guns."
Waiting for the prescription now, then it's time to drink this disgusting concoction. Blecch!
