Davinci Surgery Question

Trying to get everything in order here at work before I go out. SUrgery is set for Thursday, I will have one overnight stay in hospital. I wasn't able to find much information on how long someone has out of work. As it stands now, it will be a complete hysterectomy. I have my pre-op with the Dr on Wed, but boss wants to know how long I will be out. I thought the Dr said 4 weeks, but know I remember something about 10 days in my first office visit. I have almost 60 days of sick leave so the time is not the issue. Can anyone give me some idea or is it case by case? I would like to stay out the 4 wks, how do you let dr know this so he can put that on the out of work slip?

Yesterday, I had a going away party for my best friend, she has been there for me for 35 years... hard to say goodbye but happy that she will be gone... My friend... My menstrual cycle, she started last night.....

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

depends on your doctor and the type of job you have and how youre healing. i have a very physical job and was out 6 weeks, i could of done 8 but i needed to get back to work due to finances. i was okayed to go back to work at 6. i would take the 4 weeks.

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

I would take the 4 if you can. If you have a desk job and don't have to move around or lift or bend, earlier would probably be okay if doc says so. But if you have that much vacation time, take it so you can heal better. I am 11 days out from da Vinci and doing just fine... you will too!! Take care and good luck...

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

I had a DaVinci about a week and a half ago. I feel great. Tired. A little achy. I will say that I can't even imagine going back to work in a couple weeks. I think what is said here is true, you only have one chance to heal properly. Take as much time as you need.

By the way, congrats on the goodbye party. My friend showed her ugly head the day before surgery. She was mean, too. She was here for 24 years, but I haven't missed her at all and can't imagine ever missing her. Funny story, one week to the day of last period, my oldest dd got her first. It was like I passed the torch.

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

I am one month post from a DaVinci. I am planning on staying out of work for at least 2 more weeks. I do have a physical job (daycare with infants) so I have to be completely healed before going back to work. Take the time to heal if you can.
Good Luck

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

Katinsc -

For some women who have the supracervical hysterectomies you can sometimes see them getting back to work at 2 weeks.

I had hoped for 4 (since I had read 2 to 4) but when I talked to my gyn-onc he said "6 and maybe 8". I did 6 and worked part-time from home for the next 2 (thankfully). I was exhausted.

My personal opinion, I would go for 4 or 6 and than you can always come back in a shorter period of time if you are healing really well.

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

I just had the Da Vinci a little over 3 weeks ago and I went back to work today. I have a desk job and I could have went back at exactly 3 weeks, but had other family issues come up and decided to wait a couple extra days to come back. Tell them at the doctors office what YOU want. My doctor said if money is an issue and someone had a desk job with NO lifting at all he has let them go back at 2 weeks....for others that have the time off with a Da Vinci he said 3 weeks was normally good but up to 4 weeks was fine with him. I told them I could afford the time off and would rather have MORE approved then needed instead of worrying I would need more time and have to fight for it later......he put down 4 weeks off, and I returned a little early they were thrilled....honestly when my HR and short term dept heard I was only going to be out 4 weeks they thought it was wonderful since many with traditional have to be out the full 6-8 weeks.....ask for 4 then if you feel great go back early.

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

I am having the Da Vinci surgery too. At my job i do a lot of lifting. I work in Medical Supplies. The doctor told me 3 weeks off, but i might take an extra week. Will wait to see how i feel.

Love the "Good bye" party idea. And glad to hear some of you went in when the "old girl" was showing her ugly head. I counted out the days and the "old girl" will be with me the day of my surgery!

Can't totally "dismiss" on the old girl. She carried three handsome strong boys for me!!!

Re: Davinci Surgery Question

I was told I HAD to take 6 weeks off. I teach young children so it is pretty physical.
I am now at 3 weeks post surgery. I had the Da Vinci procedure taking all of it out- ovaries, cervix, tubes and uterus.

I drove today! No pain or discomfort at all.
So far, I had bad night sweats the second night home from the hospital and mild ones a few times since but otherwise, nothing! I sure hope it stays that way.
I don't have pain, other than MAJOR gas pains! I never had that before so I figure all my other parts in there are rearranging themselves in the empty space I provides them! LOL
I am SO glad I had the surgery- no more periods that last for months on end! You will be SO much happier afterwards! Good luck- it is not nearly as bad as you may be imaging.
