horrible periods and pain

Hi, I am new here too. I have had increasingly horrible periods, and the pain is excruciating. I went in for an ultrasound today. Technician couldn't find my ovaries without poking and prodding. My uterus is HUGE. I won't know the results until Monday, and am going crazy! Not sure what the future holds, but I'm thinking a hysterectomy is in the near future. Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: horrible periods and pain

Hi mauiwowie!! I too am having increasing horrible periods with excruciating pain. I did an ultrasound 2 years ago (adominal and transvaginal) and it was discovered that I have Adenomyosis. I didn't know then what to do or what to expect. I would say wait to see what your doctor says & it is always best to get a second or third opinion & make sure that you are comfortable with your treatment option. Also, there are tons of resources on this website - once you've got a diagnosis, you can really start researching everything!! Waiting is the hardest part isn't it?

Re: horrible periods and pain

Hello ladies
I too had horrible periods, pain etc in fact I had several periods this year that lasted 20 days, and it was full on bleeding, not just a light flow.
In 2007 I was put in Estrofem and had a Mirena (IUD) inserted all due to flooding, strange periods and of course pain! I was not ready to go down the hysto path at the time, I felt I was too young. At my ultrasound prior to surgery, they couldn't find the Mirena my fibroids were so large.
Even after the insertion of the Mirena and use of Estrofem, my periods did not cease, but they did lessen in flow. Based on my gyno's advice at the time, most women ceased their periods with the Mirena and Estrofem.
I had a TAH this year. I had gone down the only non-surgical path that I was able to. I was even told that having the Estrofem and Mirena is only a short term solution anyway - the Mirena needs to be replaced every 4-5 years.
I am not regretting my decision to have the hysto, in fact the only thing I am regretting is that I didn't get it done in 2007 when my gyno at the time said I should have it done.
Hope this makes sense and good luck with your decisions!

Re: horrible periods and pain

I wouldn't panic yet. Get the diagnosis and then look up your options. I also tend to panic and think the worst only to find out it isn't quite as bad as I feared. And once you have a diagnosis, then you can plan and look up all the options. I would make sure you get more than one opinion and try to find a really good specialist.

Re: horrible periods and pain

Thank you! I went to the doc today and have adenomyosis. I am 38 and have had two kids. I don't feel the need for my "plumbing" anymore. I don't want to take medication either. My husband and I have talked it over and it looks like a hysto is my best choice. I want a permanent fix, not a bandaid. Anyone have the same diagnosis? Thanks
