Air in tummy

I have read many stories regarding gas after surgery. I am having an LSH. Is this a procedure where air is introduced into the abdomen? Also, can anyone talk about weight gain/loss post surgery? Not sure what to expect. Thanks!

Re: Air in tummy

Hi Cindy I had a TAH so not sure specifically but it's my understanding that some surgeries do require putting gas in your tummy. You should be able to ask your surgeon about this. Gas is inevitable regardless of your type of surgery. Many of us were unable to take a BM for up to a week so for that reason alone you will have gas. The best remedy is to have a heating pad handy and some gas x. I also found a damp towel warmed in the microwave helped to draw it out.
Weight gain/loss. There are many stories to read in post op. some gain some loose but most of us do get the swelly belly regardless. I found a cool pad helps with that. Best advice is to eat very healthy and drink tons of water. Don't stress out about your weight as you need to heal in comfort. Weight can be the next challenge.
Hope this helps a bit.
All the best. 😊

Re: Air in tummy

i had the LSH on May 16th. i did weigh a little more right after surgery, but a lot of that was air or water. i was really puffy, especially hands for a few days and i sounded like a whale sometimes as the air shifted around. now i weigh less than day of surgery since i had been so bloated in the 2 weeks leading up to surgery. the swelly belly is nothing compared to that

Re: Air in tummy

Hi, sisters on my recovery thread who had a LSH talked about the gas that is introduced during surgery ... I think there is link about this on this website, maybe under the heading types of hysterectomy? So, that gas, CO2 is mostly evacuated, but some lingers a bit and it can cause discomfort until it is absorbed or whatever your body does to eliminate it. There is also intestinal gas that is a result of medication, sedation/anesthesia, and surgery stress -- and I haven't heard of anyone who escapes this gas. It is something you have to work out by drinking lots of water, walking a little every hour you are awake, taking stool softeners, eating lots of fiber and low gas foods, and being patient. I think weight loss after surgery is a crap shoot - some do, some don't. Some gain is from water weight (swelly belly). Some gain can be from over eating during recovery. Also, weight loss or gain seems to have some relevance with if you have surgical menopause (ovaries removed), but everyone seems a little different. I have gained about 10 lbs, but I had a TAH and still have swelly belly - and I think it is taking my body a bit longer to get over the stress of surgery so all my exercise, while helping me feel better (I am almost 14 weeks), hasn't resulted in any change in weight. I am sure, with patience and perseverance, I WILL eventually reach "normal"! Be sure to ask your doctor about what to expect, too. As he/she has undoubtedly done this surgery many, many times, they will have experience with what many of their patients experience. Take care, it will all be good, just may take longer than we may expect before we have the surgery!

Re: Air in tummy

Hey Sister:
After surgery will be the one time in your life when "passing gas" is no laughing matter. My surgery was on the 24th @7:30 am and by 9:30 pm I was begging myself for a "toot". The nurse gave me a chewable pill; similar to Gas X - which did wonders for the strange pains in my chest, shoulder and diaphram areas. Then a hour later I took a short walk to find relief. It wasnt until after the removal of the catheder that I found myself naturally "tooting". Remember it is very mportant to communicate with your nurses on how you are feeling;because they want to help you.
