5 months and life is still a struggle
Nicole,
I right with ya girl!!!! I had my TAH at the beginning of Dec and still suffer a great deal with fatigue.
When you see your doctor ask them to do a standard blood test to check your thyroid....as for the "free" values as well as a standard TSH. The "free" values show the amount of hormones that are available to your body to use where the totals include amounts that are not able to be used.
I have been through a terrible time getting my hormones back in balance. Be SURE your doctor is monitoring your levels because I learned my body was either too depleted or for some reason the bio-identical creams were not being absorbed very well by my body. The patches are great if they work for you.
I did just learn that my thyroid was EXTREMELY low. They felt it was because surgical menopause is like being thrown off a hormone cliff without a parachute. I know all these hormones are linked together.
It has felt like my body was trying to kill me from the inside out at times. I too have not only felt guilty, but felt bad because people at work keep asking me, "so are you feeling better now?".......I've often said "yes" just to have them quit asking me.
I think only woman who have gone through this really have a clue. I know my work performance has suffered some because of the fatigue, forgetfulness, etc. But, you can only do what you can do. Somedays my best effort is showing up!!!!
I also have times of feeling great for a few hours, then I crash. I hope the length of the feeling great just continues to get longer and longer till it becomes my new normal!!!
Be as kind to yourself as you would be to your best friend and keep coming back to this site to re-calibrate the expectations you have for yourself!
Also have your doctor check your thyroid as well as your hormone levels. Even if you kept your ovaries, they can be in shock and need a jolt, as well as they can not work as strongly as before surgery.
Let us know how you're doing! Now go take a NAP!!!
Gina

Thanks, Sisters
Hi sisters - thanks for all of the replies. Boy, we sure do have similar stories! Thanks for all of the nice, encouraging words... I hope and pray we will all be feeling better really, really soon!
Now, I have a yeast infection - have taken all of the meds for it, yet still have it! Will this ever end?
Gotta keep my sense of humor, because that's all i have at this point - and you, of course!
Have a great Sunday - will talk to you soon!
Love,
Nicole

You give me HOPE!
Hi Gina - thanks for the lovely note. We have the same story - endometriosis for years! Ever since I was 12, I had horrible periods - and now, this!
I had both of my ovaries removed - one years ago, and the latest with my TAH - it was covered with endo and so was my bladder and rectum - yuk!
I just had the blood test for the thyroid - will see what that says. and i will probably switch doctors - I have had it with my current one. She just doesn't get it. I need someone proactive - not reactive.
It is such a struggle - hormones, doctors, yeast infections, I feel like God is playing with me - I just don't get it. I know a lot of people suffer and I am lucky but you know, it still stinks - big time.
Anyway, I will keep you informed with my struggles and hopefully, triumphs - God willing!
Love,
Nicole

5 months and life is still a struggle
Hi Nicole,
I haven't had my hysterectomy yet, but I have had heavy bleeding for awhile and wacky hormones from perimenopause that have caused me to have fatigue and depression. I think that good nutrition can be a big help (along with medications and HRT). I'd like to recommend the website www.radiantrecovery.com. Although it deals with sugar addiction (which I definitely have), there is also a lot there about nutrition that helps alleviate depression. They break it down into baby steps so it is not a lot to tackle at once. When you're depressed, it can be overwhelming to try and do MORE to help yourself, I know.
I feel for you. Good luck in finding relief.

5 months and life is still a struggle
Well, for me taking more frequent naps and laying around only made me feel worse. I honestly felt much better when I made myself exercise. I HATE going to the gym but do rather well outdoors. I work second shift and just began trying tennis the other day. I really am not good at it at all but it was lots of fun trying. I also ride my bicycle all around. I try to go about 15 miles per ride.
This helps me feel better about my body and gives me extra energy too.
I hope you are on the mend real soon!
Sue

5 months and life is still a struggle
Dear Nicole,
I'm a high school teacher and also having a bad time. My TAH was in Dec, and I went back too soon (5 weeks). I have bad pains where my fibroids were every single day along with intense muscle cramps in my legs. My gyn said it's all "muscle spasms" and to take more pain killers.
I keep thinking I'm doing too much (occupational hazard--you know what I mean) and things will get better when school is out, but this isn't getting better.
Sorry- no advice- but you're not alone.
Please let me know how you're doing and if you get any good advice from elsewhere.
Laurie
TAH -everything out on my birthday!!! boo
