Re: has anyone come home that day?

I just had my RALH on Monday at 7:40am and released on Tuesday at 2:45pm. They weren't rushing me out, just wanted to make sure I could urinate and eat on my own. When I did I was given the okay to go. Honestly at one point I felt a little rushed out of the hospital but I think it was insecurity because I had just undergone a major surgery. I'm doing okay though!

I agree with what the others have said. If worse definitely talk to your doc about your concerns. Good luck!

Re: has anyone come home that day?

Thanks everyone........I was feeling rushed.........just had my pre-op today and the nurse said that they had already secured a room for me for the 23 hour period......definitely made me feel better........I am relieved to know they don't shove you out the door.........and to learn all about the 232 hour period vs 24 hour

my active mind was visualizing having surgery at 10 am and out the door by 5

Re: has anyone come home that day?

Having surgery at 10 and being "out the door" by 5 was what I preferred. If I didn't have to be in the hospital for iv fluids or any complications, I wanted to be home where I could rest better. It's a matter of personal choice, but please don't poo on going home the same day - it worked out just fine for me and lots of others.

sorry I didn't mean to offend anyone.....I just am still reeling at how fast recoveries are today for major surgery and I guess my little security blanket was knowing I would not be sent home before I was ready for it....

Re: has anyone come home that day?

I had a completely different type of surgery and couldn't have gone home the first day but I sure would've liked to. I barely slept for the 2 nights I was in the hospital and I was really feeling it. I had Ambien the 2nd night and it helped but I still only got 5 hours of sleep. I was so tired I wanted to cry by the time I could finally go home.

Re: has anyone come home that day?

I was so glad to see this discussion. My doctor has also said that my surgery (LSH with possible BSO) will be outpatient. But I just found out that my surgery is not til 12:30 so am thinking that I need to recover pretty fast in order for it to be outpatient.

A friend had an LSH with the same doctor and she really did go home the same day and didn't even have to take anything stronger than ibuprofen.

My sister just had a TAH with BSO for ovarian cancer and was in the hospital for 5 days with all kinds of post-op issues so I'm a little worried - just don't want to be sent home and then have all kinds of issues with no medical staff around to help me with them. Especially since my surgery is on a Friday so the next day is the weekend.

Re: has anyone come home that day?

I'm having my hyst in 2 weeks, and I was told that my surgery is at 7am, and I'll be released by noon! I'm having it done laparoscopically, so that makes a big difference. Open incisions have to stay longer.

Re: has anyone come home that day?

I'm learning that when they mean outpatient it can be from that afternoon to a 23 hour period.... it was very misleading to me.....I'm learning to shake off a lot of pre-conceived ideas through this journey

every person's body reacts differently....your friend was very fortunate, and I'm sorry to hear your sis had such a rough time. Your dr seems to think yours will be uncomplicated and you'll be more like your friend.....that should be comforting for you.

Re: has anyone come home that day?

I guess it also depends on how much you are having done as well. I went in on Friday morning and went home on Saturday afternoon. My doctor asked me if I wanted to stay another day and I said "NO!" Only because I wasn't in any pain, and I knew I could sleep better at home. Good luck to you and I hope you have an uneventful surgery and a speedy recovery.

Re: has anyone come home that day?

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I am so glad to have this site for support and info. I will ask my doc about the 23-hour thing (didn't know about it til I read it here). She did say that she thought my case was not complicated and she didn't think she'd need to get a bed in the OR for me (at least for the moment).

Which by the way, does anyone know what the difference is between a bed in the "OR" and a regular bed in the hospital? Is an OR bed the one they use for the first 23 hours? Or maybe I didn't hear her right.
