I'm not experiencing swelling or weight gain

I keep reading about swollen bellies and weight gain post-op. I'm not experiencing that, quite the opposite actually. I wore my jeans home from the hospital and needed to add a few more holes to my belt and I'm down 10+ lbs on the scale. Is this normal? Or am I the only one?

Re: I'm not experiencing swelling or weight gain

Hi Lizzy,
You probably won't see many post about not having a swelly belly!
I didn't have that issue either... Actually my belly was flatter post op (uterus was pushing everything).
When I got back to work after 6 weeks, I would occasionally get a bit of a swell, but nothing like I read in some posts... It would be gone by the morning...
I guess we are luck ladies

Re: I'm not experiencing swelling or weight gain

I, too, didn't swell like most of the other ladies post. I did have some minimal swelling that caused a roll over my incision, but when that tiny bit of swelling went at about 8 months or so, the roll was pretty well gone. I was down 7 lbs from the lack of food and surgery. I went down a pant size immediately which made me happy considering I had been walking around with a 5 month uterus which is not attractive in a 52 year old woman. I was back in my jeans in a week or so.

Re: I'm not experiencing swelling or weight gain

My middle swelled, but only for about a week and a half to two weeks. After that, the man-waist went down, and I had lost weight as well. I just couldn't get up any enthusiasm for eating. And about five weeks out, I caught the most vicious cold; by the time that cleared up, I was down 17lbs that I could NOT stand to lose. Have put back about 12 of it so far, thankfully.

Re: I'm not experiencing swelling or weight gain

People are more likely to post about things that make them unhappy than things that make them happy. That's just human nature. I wore loose khakis to the hospital with a large safety pin to temporarily take in the waist. I wore them home again three days later without the pin because I was carrying about 15 lbs in water weight. My kidneys got rid of that for me within a day or two. During recovery (inJune), I wore what I usually wear: loose pants or shorts and T-shirts.

Starting in about my third week, as I became more active, I experienced some minor swelling in the evenings. If I'd been wearing close-fitting pants during the day, I'd have to swap them out for a looser pair in the evenings. The swelling was always gone by the next day. That lasted about six months.

I was underweight at the time of surgery - I weighed in at 116 lbs and I'm 5'10". This was due to stress from 1) tax season, and 2) upcoming surgery. As is normal for me at this time of year, I've been gradually gaining the weight back, about 12 lbs or so. Of course, we're about to go back into tax season, so I'll start losing again.
