12 days post hysterectomy: 2 antibiotics and still a uti? is it possible??
Hi Ladies, I have a question, is it possible to take a weeks worth of bactrim and then a week worth's of Cipro and take them on time and correctly and still have a uti or maybe a kidney infection? My pelvis area hurts when urinating especially in the morning with the same left side flank pain and pressure.

Re: 2 antibiotics and still a uti? is it possible??
A possibility with the pain could be bladder spasms. We hold the urine all night and it is pretty sensitive right now. My doc at the hospital said not to hold more than 4 hours. However pretty hard to do that when you are sleeping....I had these pains in the morning and during the day and I didn't have a UTI. Doc said could be spasms. However if you are still unsure, you should go see your doc.

Re: 12 days post hysterectomy: 2 antibiotics and still a uti? is it possible??
dear sister, and I'm so sorry that you're experiencing bladder pain. It can really smart and can also give the blues. I have seen many urologists over the years for interstitial cystitis so, at least in my experience, it is possible to have bladder pains after 2 antibiotics if you didn't really have a bacterial bladder infection. It's also possible to have a UTI that's resistant to Bactrim and Cipro (I've often been cured by Keflex of a bona fide UTI). So it's important to insist on a culture and a uro consult if your symptoms persist.
Bladder Spasms happen often, as you know, but I know you want to be feeling better 2 months + post-op! Something else that helps oftentimes is an estrogen cream: you could be suffering from vaginal dryness since it seems you had both ovaries removed, and dryness can mimic bladder symptoms.
Thus, I'd really urge you to follow up with both your gynecologist and a urologist.
As one who has negotiated IC for a couple decades, I can also share some things that have helped me, including drinking plenty of water and choosing bladder-friendly foods (avoiding caffeine—and not just coffee and tea but dark chocolate [sob], plus alcohol, citrus, vinegar, tomatoes, acidic/heavily processed/salty foods, carbonated beverages…. all the fun stuff)!
And, if you've not yet checked out these resources, both are terrific (even if you don't suffer from IC, as I do): there are excellent recommendations about diet, e.g., which can really improve the experience of bladder symptoms.

Re: 12 days post hysterectomy: 2 antibiotics and still a uti? is it possible??
Thank you for your replies. I learned some things from your replies. I had no idea food and drink could affect the bladder in a different way. Yesterday I had almost everything you mentioned was not good to have! Secondly my uti was confirmed right when I was being discharged from hospital from combined blood work and urine test. My confusion is what does the blood work show that could point to a UTI and how does a Dr know if and when it could be a kidney infection?

Re: 12 days post hysterectomy: 2 antibiotics and still a uti? is it possible??
Kidney, bladder, and uretha (spelling?) infections are all forms of UTI's. So if your doc just said UTI he could b treating you for any of the above. I would call your doc and ask what kind and explain the pain you are having. I dont know if they use different meds to treat different forms but its worth a shot to ask......
I am a heavy caffeine drinker so have all of the above often, cant find any of my old scripts to see if they are different meds depending on what kind of infection i had. Must have thrown them out already, until this surgery it had been a while since i had had one, but am now plagued with a bladder infection that wont go away!!
Hope you feel better really soon!!

Thank you for the additional information. I also did not know that a uti could mean any of the infections? I am also a heavy caffine person, so I will increase water intake, decrease caffeine, and decrease the earlier mentioned forbidden items. I see my GYN in a few days for my 2 week check up so I will mention everything to him then. I am def having bladder spasms I am taking meds for that.

CNT, I'm on my second bladder infection too. I had my surgery on 1/15/14. This time my doctor gave me a 30 day script for macrobid (not sure about spelling). Hopefully this time it will be cleared up. I haven't had a bladder infection in years. Not sure what is causing this. Just want it to go away. Hope you figure out what's causing your UTI and find a medicine that will clear it up.

UTI help PLEASE
Hi Ladies, Im at my 2 week mark today from surgery. 3 days before surgery I was put on bactrim for UTI, I was tested for UTI day I was leaving hospital and then I was put on cipro for 5 days. 3 days ago I started with lower left flank pain very badly again and bad bladder spasms and going to the bathroom like 25 times in 3 hours, I assumed maybe it was from surgery because I read bladder spasms can be a normal thing.
I had DH pick up home UTI test and took it last night and this morning both came up positive for UTI again AHHHHHHHH. MY question is I see DR tomorrow for my two week follow up would you call him today to start antibiotic or wait for a blood test or something tomorrow?

Re: 12 days post hysterectomy: 2 antibiotics and still a uti? is it possible??
You should request for a urine culture to be done. You may home up positive on urinalysis but have no bacteria present... The culture will confirm the presence of bacteria (which antibiotic will help) or if no bacteria grows then interstitial cystitis should be considered. It will not be fixed with antibiotics. your diet controls it. The bladder lining itself is compromised and needs to heal.
