Cuff stitches not dissolving

I am 11 wks post op and at my 6 wk visit my stocked were still intact and I had some granulation tissue that was treated with silver nitrate. I went back today for my follow up and the stitches were still there!! She had to pull them out. It actually wasn't painful, just felt a tad uncomfortable and "pokey". She also cut a chunk of granulation tissue and applied more nitrate. She showed me the stitches and tissue. I go back in 3 wks. She is baffled as to why they didn't dissolve especially since my external stitches healed instantly and they are the same type. I take vitamins, drink water, eat protien, etc. Crazy!!

Re: Cuff stitches not dissolving

Hi RN96, I am 5 weeks PO TAH today and went in a few days ago for ongoing pain that I had prior to surgery so she did an exam and I still had my stitches also. She was shocked they were still there also and made sure that I kept my appt for my 6wk follow up, which is actually for the 7th week. I am actually glad you posted that when your stitches were removed it wasn't that painful because I was nervous about that. I am in so much pain (post op pain and unexplained pelvic pain) so I know to take something before I go to that appointment just in case. Thanks so much for posting your experience! Kristin

Re: Cuff stitches not dissolving

That is why I wanted to post was to alleviate fears. It was unexpected for me as I honestly thought they would be gone or not far from it. Hopefully the silver nitrate will assist with further healing now that they are gone.

Re: Cuff stitches not dissolving

Hi RN96...I just went in for 6wk post op and when I asked her if there was still stitches left she said yes....She said she used a slower dissolving stitch..could take 4-6 months for them to fully dissolve.

I just thought I would throw that in here too incase some women were wondering. It is something that the ladies might want to ask their doctors about.

Re: Cuff stitches not dissolving

Bummer is that while many sisters have returned to sex at this stage, I am still on restrictions. I will be 14 wks at my next appt but we leave for vacation the next week, and will be hesitant to try even if dr says ok.

Re: Cuff stitches not dissolving

Could be...she actually released me for sex, but just have to be very careful...I think her words were no jackhammer sex...I love my doc. Hahahaha...she said there is a possibility that he could feel the stitches, but unlikely. I am a little scared as it is anyways. Imay wait a couple more weeks.

Hope you can have some fun on vacation.

Re: Cuff stitches not dissolving

According to my doc, every single one was still in place...guess they took up residence, lol!! I read somewhere last night that sometimes your body perceives stitches as a foreign body and slows the healing process.
