How early could you register with the hospital?
I've known that December 12th was my date since July. But I can't register with the hospital or make my pre-op appointment until around 30 days out. This seems awefully late to me. I'm worried that I'll have problems with my insurance and would prefer more time. Can you ladies let me know how far in advance you registered?

Re: How early could you register with the hospital?
I've had my date for about a month now - a little less - and was told the pre-op will be within 2 weeks before my date and the registration will be the day before over the phone.
But my insurance was already approved - my doctor's office told me that and I called my insurance company to confirm (because I'm a trust but verify kind of girl.)
Regarding your pre-op, I've never heard of doing it too far in advance because they are checking your health status and blood levels, etc. so the information and tests need to be current.
There is no reason you can't call your doctor and/or insurance company and check on your approval in the meantime, though. You don't need a pre-op for that - at least not in my experience.

Re: How early could you register with the hospital?
I got my surgery date (May 29) about a month and a half before surgery. I was told at that time that someone would call 30 days in advance with more info. Sure enough, a nurse called on April 30 to give me a time - which I promptly renegotiated - ask a lot of questions, give me my pre-op instructions re: eating and drinking, etc. She also made arrangements with my local hospital (since I was having surgery in another city) to take samples and run tests two weeks before surgery.
As PinkTech says, the samples and tests can't be done too far in advance because they're meant to supply an accurate picture of your health at the time of surgery.
Also, I suspect that the hospital doesn't really want your registration information now because right now, they're busy working on registering the patients who are having surgery a month from now. As is often the situation when obtaining health care, you've got to get in line and wait your turn.
