Upcoming hysterectomy 5/14: When will the nerves set in?

So it's late Sunday night here in New Zealand and my TVH with anterior and posterior repairs and vaginal vault suspension is on Thursday but I am yet to feel the crazy insane nerves setting in that I would have expected! I was more nervous and worried a week or so ago than I am now! I keep feeling like its not going to go ahead, like something is going to happen and it will be cancelled or I will get sick etc... I read so many posts about feeling the opposite and im worried im not preparing myself enough... Has anyone else felt this way?

I looked forward to mine and I was only worried about how I would react to the anesthesia due to my other health conditions. I was excited.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/14: When will the nerves set in?

It can be normal. I was excited for my surgery. I wanted to get mine over and done with asap, and the soonest I was able to schedule mine was 3 wks after my initial consult (my doctors schedule was completely booked).

My nerves didn't set in until I was walking into the pre op ward on the day of my surgery. I was still excited, but very nervous about the surgery...I looked calm, but my blood pressure shot up to 140/90... My np is normally 105/65, lol ; )

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/14: When will the nerves set in?

Everyone's different. I had ten weeks between diagnosis and surgery. Some days I was really focussed on preparation and research. Some days I was just too busy with other stuff in my life to think about the upcoming surgery. Some days I felt really calm about the whole thing, and some days I freaked right out!

There's certainly no right or wrong way to feel.

My surgery was for cancer, so overall I felt pretty positive about the surgery itself. Surgery = surgeon cuts cancer-containing uterus out! Yeah!

I had an attack of the what-ifs the evening before surgery and dealt with that by staying up late scrubbing the apartment. Then I had to get up early to get to the hospital. By the time I got there, I was completely calm because I was too tired to freak out anymore. :-)

I feel the same way. Feels like I should be worried or upset about surgery but I am not. Just can't wait to get my life back.

My hyster is Wednesday. Hang in there!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/14: When will the nerves set in?

I felt the same way choo choo.
At first I was terrified, then I was just looking forward to getting it over with.

The morning of surgery it hit me, and there were some tears.

However, I had a wonderful experience at the hospital. My husband told them only one person/team was allowed to come in at a time, pre-op. This was really helpful...I've had other surgeries where the anesthesiologist was trying to talk to me while the nurse was trying to give me the IV. No way, that just made my anxiety extremely intense.
One at a time please...

I'm glad you are not a nervous wreck! You can do this....you have probably heard this from other sisters, but waiting is the hardest part.

This is major surgery, but for me...overall, it was a piece of cake. Good luck!

See that's what I love about this website, no matter what your feeling there will always be someone else going thru similar feelings, so thank you ladies, I do appreciate it

Just got a quick call from my anaesthesiologist before and he just checked which medications I was on and which ones to stop etc and re-run thru when to eat and drink until and what time roughly my surgery will be so yeah, looks like I can be nervous now LOL

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 5/14: When will the nerves set in?

Yeah, sometimes it seems as if the more instructions they give you, the more things you have to be nervous about. One of the things I was worried about was passing out from low blood sugar, since I had total of three miles to walk to get from my apartment to the bus station and from the bus station to the hospital in my destination city. (I didn't, I was fine.) And another one was, what happens if my arthritis flares up while I'm not allowed to take ibuprofen? (It didn't, I was fine.)

I tended to be more worried about things for which *I* would be responsible for handling the results. The surgery itself? Who cares! I was going to be unconscious, doing the surgery correctly was my gyn onc's problem!
