Pre-op medications and anesthesia

Hi Everyone-You are all amazing! This is such a wonderful site!

I have had surgery before (three C-sections and one other) and have been on medications which the Dr. never asked me to stop taking prior to the surgery. I'm really nervous about the interactions between present (different) medications and anesthesia. This is probably my biggest worry at this point. I will be talking to the Dr. that prescribed them and the anesthesiologist but I'm not terribly trusting at the moment. Has anyone taken meds. that they were told they definitely needed to stop prior to surgery ( I know some stay in your system for weeks even after they are stopped) or have some of you taken meds. with no concerns about interactions? I expect to be missing my female parts when I wake up-I just don't want to be missing my brain too because of some anesthesia drug interaction.

Pre-op medications and anesthesia

The only medication I had to stop taking was my blood thinners - I stopped them a week before surgery. Call your doc to find out if you need to stop any of your meds. If your doc isn't certain, call the anesthesiologist.

Hi Bsealy,
NO problem, just inform the pre op nurse of all the medications that you are on and they will work with you..Good Luck

I was and still am on a butt load of meds, blood pressure meds, percocet for back and nerve issues, ibuprofen, durgesic patch, flexaril, ambien and lexapro. I was told to keep taking everything except the ibuprofen, that is a blood thinner and I had to stop 2 weeks before. The durgesic patch stayed on through the surgery, the blood pressure meds were taken the morning of surgery, everything else i had last dose 12hrs before surgery.

That being said, you must be completely up front and honest with your dr's and nurses and get specific instructions from them. Every doctor prefers different things.
