Picking up baby?
I am scheduled for a tvh on march 6th. Originally I was suppose to have a LEEP done to remove cancer on my cervix. But then they got my biopsies back they found it was in my birth canal and uterus. I am still in a bit of shock over all of this. I am mentally prepared to have a hysterectomy.
I did just have a baby 4 months ago. Am I gonna be able to lift my little one after my surgery? He weighs 13 pounds right now. Does anyone know the weight restrictions for lifting?

Re: Picking up baby?
My doc said nothing over 10 lbs. I'm restricted for the full 6 weeks post op, but I'm having the hysterectomy and a ton of reconstructive stuff done at the same time. I hear most women are given the go-ahead around 2 weeks, but it will be up to your doctor depending on how you are healing.

Re: Picking up baby?
I'm so sorry you're going through this. Alaskansinger is right. The rule of thumb is to lift nothing over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. But, 13 lbs is close. Talk to your doctor and perhaps after the 4 week mark you will be able to lift your baby. You would have to give it a minimum of 4 weeks or you would risk tearing your vagina open when you lift. You can hold him if someone passes him to you after the 2 week mark.
My "baby" is 2, but still quite young enough that she expects to be held and she still eats in a high chair and can't get in her car seat without me lifting her. But she weighs 24 lbs and my doctor said absolutely no lifting her until the full 6 weeks. And my doctor explained this is because I'm losing my cervix and will have a vaginal cuff that must heal. Lifting anything puts pressure and strain on the vagina, so when you lose your cervix you must really take the no lifting rule seriously.
She told me that after 4 weeks I can hold her if someone passes her to me and take her when I need to set her down.

Re: Picking up baby?
It's a definite "ask your doctor" question. I'm guessing for the first few weeks, he/she will want the baby handed to you, probably while you're sitting down, especially since you'll be having reconstructive work done as well.
My doctor told me not to lift anything over 10 lbs and nothing that I can't lift with just one hand for the first 2 weeks. It will be torture not to be able to run and pick up your little bundle, but you need to heal properly so you have a lifetime of pick-ups and hugs. Good luck!!

Re: Picking up baby?
Everyone is different. My doctor said nothing over 10 pounds, but after my 2 week post-op check up, since I was doing so well, she upped that to 15 pounds.
Follow your doctor's post-op instructions very carefully or you could set back your recovery, or worse. To quote another sister, "Bored and stir crazy beats repair surgery."
I would certainly cuddle with my child - after someone has handed him to me. You will want to be careful not to get kicked in the stomach, 'cause that will hurt like @#$%^&* - even without abdominal incisions.

Re: Picking up baby?
its not suppose to b over 10lbs but someone can certainly hand your lil one over..put a pillow down over ur belly (i forget if your havin open abdominal). prolly shouldn't when your little one is squirming ard...but they look so precious when they are sleeping! I have an 18 month old and feel crushed bc i can't lift her, & wont beable to hold her for "several weeks" he hasn't gave me a definite..good luck to u!!
