Pain Meds - How Long?
Curious as to how long and how often you gals took pain meds...
I'm 19 days post TVH, and I'm averaging 1-2 Norco a day, with Motrin every 6-8 hours...
Had a lot more pain today than I've been having. Hope this isn't a sign of things to come. I have my post-op appt. on 11/29.

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
Hi I had a TAH on 11/1/13 and I was on norco and ibuprofen 600 but my OBGYN acts as if I shouldn't need any more! I don't agree!! 21 days from being cut, I think some pain would still remain!! Sorry I can't help with time frame, only my opinion.

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
I'm 15 days out from an abdominal hysterectomy. I'm taking maybe one Norco at night. Motrin every 8 or so hours. I really think everyone is different. Your Dr shouldn't make you feel like you "should be done" with pain meds. Being in pain can extend the healing process. You know your body best.

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
Hi Kimmo8, i was on pretty much the same med-schedule as you currently are. Week 3 can be tough, worse than week 2 but then the pain often gradually reduces. I think its impossible though to say how much and for how long as we're all so different. You will heal much better if not in pain so i took pain meds for as long as i needed them, quite a few weeks in fact. Hope you soon feel some relief.

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
I was almost med free until the last few days. Discomfort worse heading into week three (which appears normal reading posts here,) so taking Tylenol and or Ibuprofen when needed.
I am avoiding the narcs due to negative impact on BM's.
Take what you need to feel comfortable as this aids your healing.
Hugs xxxx

Pain Meds - How Long?
Hi Kimm08,
I sorry to hear about your pain. I am at 7 1/2 weeks post op, and I am still taking ibuprofen 800 and dilaudid as needed. I found that the severe pains come and go for me. My doctor is doing a ct scan next week, because the pain continues and I am still recovering from post op infection.
For the gass pains in the beginning I took milk of magnesia twice a day and it really helped with consistent bm's. The miralax did not work for me.
Stay ahead of the pain and take it as directed. If you wait until you are already in pain, the meds do not work as well.
Hope my experiences can help you.
Good luck in your recovery and rest!

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
I took the Vicodin 3-4 x/day for 5 days, then stopped due to my belief that they were a major contributor to the horrendous painful constipation I was suffering.. 2 days later after prune juice, yogurt, tons of water, stool softeners, miralax, and senna plus.. My bowels slowly started to function..out of fear of relapse I never took another one.. Until about day 13.. I began feeling human around day 10 or so.. Short trips to the store, bought an unneeded loaf of bread.. For me the psychological benefit of driving, and feeling human again, was unbelievable.. I felt like a teenager just getting their liscence.. Days 11ish-18, I had good and bad days.. There was one day that I slept 16 hours.. There was one that I shopped for hours.. Never pushed the cart.. As soon as I feel the fatigue I now go home.. There were 2 nights that I felt pain.. I took 1 pain pill each time.. And slept like a baby.. I did, in retrospect, struggle with the decision to take it.. Ridiculous.. YOUR pain is what your pain is.. So I am in my 3rd week.. I feel stronger every day..I do rake 2-3 800g ibuprofen every day as I have since day 1. I still don't lift or vacuum.. I do whatever I want dependent upon how I'm feeling at that given moment.. I now go hours without thinking about my hysterectomy.. Until one of those " someone's choking my ovary" a 2 second feeling that a knife had been jammed up me.. Those began a couple od days ago.. Probably due to the vaginal cuff healing? But luckily, they come out of nowhere, and are over in 2 seconds , long before my eyeballs settle back into the sockets it's all part of the healing process.. And each of us will have different experiences... If you have pain. Take a pill. Simple.

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
Everyone's really, really different when it comes to pain. I had dilaudid the first two days while I was in the hospital after my TAH. I was released on Day 3 with instructions to take OTC ibuprofen and/or acetaminophen as needed for minor pain, call the hospital re: major pain. I took ibuprofren pretty regularly the first week, occasionally the second week.

Re: Pain Meds - How Long?
My tah was the 12th...I stopped taking my hydrocodone regularly about 5 days ago. Still taking prescription Ibuprofen. I have taken 3 random hydrocodone since then, a few instances where my pain has been worse for a bit. I think everyone heals and feels pain differently. You should take them as long as you feel you need to. For me, once I stopped taking them and the constipation cleared up I actually felt a lot better.
