Infection, anyone?

Hello, all. Has anyone had experience with an ongoing infection? I'm five weeks out from my TAH/RSO/bowel resection. I developed an infection at the lower end of my vertical incision (icky--lots of drainage) which is finally closing, but I'm still running a low grade fever (99.5), feeling very tired, and having left-sided pain. My surgeon put me on a second antibiotic last week, but I'm not noticing much change. Any and all advice welcome!

Infection, anyone?

Hi, Sonie.

Sounds like a long saga for you! How are you bearing up? I have become a total soggy noodle--weak and wobbly. My main concern is that the doctor found a new cyst in my remaining ovary, and it could be an infection. I don't want to lose my last ovary. Also, I need to get back to work in August, so I want this to be over with! In the long run, I'm sure the hysterectomy will have been worth it, but right now, it's a pain in my rear (or front, as the case may be). I feel like a bit of a whiner, and want to be up and about. And I've only had this for five weeks, while it's been months for you. I can't imagine! How do you deal with your kids?

Infection, anyone?

I got a staph infection too, i was home 1 day and back in hospital, since my dr is not in my home town i had to be flown back to San Antonio. they opened my incision and drained it for a day at the hospital then they placed what they call a wound vac on the open part of my incision. And i was put on mega antibiotics, ones that turned my urine orange and shot my taste buds but i was over my infection within a week. the wound vac helped because it does just that. It vacuums all the discharge that causes the infection. Perhaps you should ask your doc about it. it's called the KCI Freedom wound-vac...i had it for 8 days...the nurses form the home health care came in to change it every other day and the healing progressed so much faster.

My wound is still open but but is healing very well and the dr will close it up with steri-strips this friday in yet another post-op visit. My antibiotics that I brought home were for 14 days and i feel so much better. Maybe ur antibiotics aren't strong enough. I don't think an infection should run 5 weeks. I'm 4 week post-op.
