Urination worry !!!! One week post op lavh a&p repair
I am one week post op after having a LAVH AP repair. I was told a year ago that the op was necessary due to uterine prolapse assumedly due to three vaginal deliveries. Being an anxious patient it took me a year to decide that the time was right for me to go ahead with the surgery. As we live in a third world African country I had the op in South Africa. They did the op with a combination of spinal and general anasthesia. The normal procedure is to stay one night in the clinic post op and then discharge the following day providing that one can wee. They removed the catheter at 5am and at about 8am, I managed a small wee - they seemed happy enough. At about 10am when my family arrived to collect me - I was not comfortable and experiencing pain in my lower abdomen - this steadily worsened. I called the sister and asked her if she could recatheterize me and she refused saying that if I had been able to wee - it was not possible. I am not sure now regarding the time but think that it was about 2pm - I was now in excruciating pain - moaning & groaning and begging them to recathertize me as I thought that this was surely the problem. Another sister agreed and inserted the catheter - immediately there was relief - she drew off 1500ml of urine. We were horrified - no wonder I was in such agony. My gynae says that there must have been a lot of swelling on the anterior repair which could have caused the problem. I am now back in my own country and very concerned. The info from the net says that the bladder can hold up to 800 ml of urine before danger of backing up to the kidneys and doing damage or tearing. I had 1500ml in my bladder. My current output of urine is not good. Has anybody else experienced this ? Must I go and have investigations done or am I expecting too much too soon ???
Just to make things even more interesting I went home with a case of food poisoning - so had a very uncomfortable bottaaammm considering the posterior repair !
Otherwise as they say " everything was fine " A bit of pain associated with the posterior repair and absolutely no pain in the vaginal area. My uterus is back from pathology with the all clear.
This is a great forum and I have really found it helpful in dealing with this milestone in my life. XX

Re: Urination worry !!!! One week post op lavh a&p repair
Hi advicepls,
I just saw your post... I had a TAH on 1/12 so am almost 3 weeks post-op. I am also having trouble urinating. My bladder always feels full. I go to the bathroom once an hour, but only wee a tablespoon or so... this has been going on for the last 4 or so days. I called my dr. yesterday and she wants to see me tomorrow morning to double-check on me. She said if I stopped urinating to get to the ER for a catheter immediately. But it could just be swelled tissue pressing on my bladder. I am thin so my swelly belly is very obvious on me. I feel so bad for you that they refused to catheratisze you when you knew what was going on. How terrible!! Years ago I had a bladder infection that went into my kidneys. I had no symptoms other than pressure in the bladder. They treated me with antibiotics and I have been fine since. It apparently did not cause any kidney damage but the doctor said if it ever happened again, not to wait. I am anxious to see what she finds, if anything, tomorrow. **HUGS**

Re: Urination worry !!!! One week post op lavh a&p repair
beachdweller,
this is what is happening with me too, I am only 4 days post op, But I push and strain and only a bit of urine comes out, I repeat until I have maybe gone one third what I normally would, then go back in an hour and try again. I have to bear down to achieve it. Talked to my doctor and he said give myself more time and drink lots and lots. Then a nurse called from the hospital and she suggested I hold a rolled up towel to my stomach when trying and that has actually seen some improvement, I went some without straining to start off. You are further along than I am so it may be a urinary track infection. They told me if mine persists much longer they may give me antibiotic for urinary track.

Re: Urination worry !!!! One week post op lavh a&p repair
Things are much better now with the urination. My Dr says that he did a good tight anterior repair and that would have created some swelling affecting the bladder. I also did not take anti inflams straight away as do not do brufen. So I only started CELEBREX (anti inflam) later. They really should have paid more attention to my request for recath as I am not happy that such strain was put on my bladder !! They did not even examine my tum - I think that they thought I was being a baby about pain from the op - meanwhile that was all totally manageable. I am not out of the woods yet though ---- I flew home to Uganda ( 4 hr flight) a week after surgery and have developed a DVT. FOr my op I had a spinal anasthetic in addition to the general which is designed to give a longer pain free window post surgery. Of course my legs were immobile for many hours. I wish that someone had recommended compression stockings for me after the op but nobody did !! I would have worn them for the flight home as well. I have never had a DVT before and I can assure you that I do not want to have another. It is a dangerous condition and the treatment ongoing for 3 - 6 months. I am 4 days into the treatment and have to go for nasty little tummy jabs of LMW heparin every day as well as INR tests ! Please recommend stockings for sisters - they can prevent DVT !!

Re: Urination worry !!!! One week post op lavh a&p repair
My heart goes out to you. I had to have my bladder drained 2x after my LAVH. Once was 550 ml the second 600. I can't imagine what 1500 felt like. I know my bladder had a VERY hard time functioning, actually kept me in the hospital for 4 days. After that it seemed like a major issue for at least 2 weeks, at which point it did start to decrease. I am almost 5 weeks most op now. It still has its moments however generally much better. Best of luck to you.

Re: Urination worry !!!! One week post op lavh a&p repair
Hi all,
Just an update on my bladder situation here. Just got home from the Dr's. I am not fully emptying my bladder... I tried to pee while there and only went like a tablespoon. Then she put a catheter in (OUCH!!! That sucked) and sure enough, my bladder was 2/3 full.
She has given me a prescription that is suppose to make your bladder contract and also scheduled an ultrasound for next Wednesday. In the meantime, if I can't go to the bathroom, I need to head straight to the ER for an emergency catheter.
It is either my bladder just isn't back to normal yet or there is some type of structural damage. We won't know until after the ultrasound. The pain is a combination of full bladder and tissue that is waking back up.
Are we having fun yet? :-) Keep your fingers crossed it is nothing structural. I really need to be back to normal soon.
