Not sure if I have options

I've got one large fibroid. It's uncomfortable, and would probably be considered only minimally painful. By the end of most days, though, I feel like I've been beaten up from the inside, slightly nauseated, rarely eat dinner due to that.

Periods can be heavy and always last about 1.5 weeks, if not a little longer.

Scheduled for surgery in late-august. Believe the plan is a sub-total hysterectomy, leaving cervix. Also removing left ovary due to calcified cyst. Leaving the right ovary.

I'm 49. Never planned on having kids plus figure I'm metabolically out of the running, so that part's not an issue. Don't have a family history of uterine/ovarian cancers. Not sure that I have any other choices.

Current surgery plan is laparoscopic, but might have to convert to open due to prior surgeries. The gyn did a pap at my last exam to make sure that's still normal; never had an abnormal pap.

Re: Not sure if I have options

Hi

If you're unsure about having the surgery planned for you maybe you should ask your doctor a few more questions to help you decide?

I was really keen for my TAH as my quality of life was so compromised I was desperate to get some normality back.

What were you hoping the doctor would do for you?? Did he give you any options to think about eg removing the fibroid, or just say SAH?

It's good to check out all possibilities before surgery, as it helps you feel happier with your eventual decision

Re: Not sure if I have options

You may want to get a second or third opinion to help you explore your options. I had lived with my symptoms from my fibroid for so long that getting a TAH was such a relief. I'm amazed how much better I feel. Don't be afraid to keep asking questions and get more opinions if necessary.

Re: Not sure if I have options

Thanks everyone.

I do have surgery scheduled. I'm sitting here this morning feeling like I've been kicked in the liver from the inside, so I'm thinking it'd be good to have this thing gone.

I did speak to the doctor about options, and he didn't think there was any chance on removing only the fibroid. I did make another appointment with the doctor, though, to ask more questions.

Re: Not sure if I have options

You may want to get a second opinion with a different doctor. There are options besides hysterectomy that may work for you.
After having an ultrasound, I was told by my GP that I should schedule a visit with a gynecologist for a hysterectomy. That scared me to bits. I sought out advice from two other specialist and am glad that I did. I was told what would work for me and what would not work for me. A hysterectomy was in the mix of what would work, but so were several other options. I am 3 days post UAE and very happy I went this route. Best of luck, take care of yourself!
