Fibroid & Ovarian Cysts

I'm waiting for my appointment with a GYN/Oncologist. I have a 5cm fibroid and 5cm ovarian cyst and a CA-125 of 173. I'm glad I found this site.. I'm guessing that he will want to do some surgery to see if the cyst is cancerous because I'm 50 and perimenopausal. Anyone else out there have a similar situation?

I also have many large fibroids. My uterus is the size of a 12 week pregnancy. On my last routine ultrasound in September 04 to check on my fibroids, a cyst was discovered on my right ovary. I never had cysts on my ovaries before. The doctor concluded it was a 6cm dermoid teratoma. He said it had to come out. He gave me a CA 125 test and it was 45....slightly elevated. This made him rush my surgery. I was 45 years old. On November 22, I had surgery to remove the ovary with the cyst. He examined my other ovary and uterus and decided not to give me a hysterectomy even though I had many fibroids. He also couldn't remove the cyst laprascopically so I had to have a bikini incision. I still had 6 weeks of recovery and I might now have a hernia in the area due to the surgery. Another surgery is in my future to repair this hernia. I just recently missed my first period in 32 years and got very nervous that I might be going into menopause and he could have taken it all out. Luckily my period came this month so I am somewhat relieved. Hope things work out for you. If you have any questions feel free to write me.

Thanks Lisa, for responding. It helps to hear that your doctor only removed the one ovary and that it was not cancerous. I'm hoping for a similar outcome. I heard a statistic that in one study only 2% of the women with elevated CA-125 had ovarian cancer, but that of women who were diagnosed with it, 80% had an elevated level of CA-125. I'm hoping to be in the 98 percentile.
