hysterectomy, vaginal prolapse, questions and concerns

10 years ago I had surgery for a prolapsed uterus. After 3 years of complaining to my OB/GYN of returning symptoms, I finally decided to do research on available options.

I had a consultation with a urogynecologist who has informed me my suspension has failed. He feels my best option is a hysterectomy. My surgery options (laproscopic - keep my cervix) or vaginally (lose my cervix). I also have the option to use mesh or my own ligaments for the vaginal vault suspension. On top of this, I will need A&P repair for cystocele with possible bladder sling and I'm at the beginning stages of rectocele. I'm currently at a 3rd degree prolapse and feel awful. I am so CONFUSED!

To make matters worse, I received a bill for $112 after speaking to my doctor for 5 minutes on the phone. I'm seeking any advice, support from those of you who are going through the same situation. I need help and understanding of my options before proceeding with surgery.

Re: hysterectomy, vaginal prolapse, questions and concerns

Hey Kim1970,
I'm going for a robotic supra cervical hysterectomy, keeping cervix, Nov28 th, I too am having a cystocele repair( but my Doc, is using my ligaments to do the repair with), and using the smallest piece of mesh to help in holding urethra in place, I am also a 3plus stage cystocele and am also having a rectocele repair. I'm not too concerned about the small piece of mesh. I feel good about it now after learning so much on this site, hope this helps, good luck, Cat

Re: hysterectomy, vaginal prolapse, questions and concerns

I too have a uterine prolapse, cystocele and rectocele. I'm having a total vaginal hysterectomy, removing the uterus and cervix and right ovary. We talked about using mesh but decided to just use a small piece for the bladder sling. I'm a little nervous about what kind of pain I'm going to have after the rectocele repair, but i don't think the recovery is going to be much worse than the pain I'm experiencing everyday when I have to go to the bathroom. Really looking forward to being able to empty my bladder completely and not feel like I have to pee again as soon as I stand up from the toilet! Plus I think I'll be able to sleep at night without having constant bladder pressure!

Re: hysterectomy, vaginal prolapse, questions and concerns

Thanks for the feedback. My research has me wanting the mesh repair, since it has a higher success rate. My doctor said if I choose my own ligaments, although better for the body, it has a higher recurrence. I see that both of you chose to use ligaments. Can you explain why you chose this way? I feel like the "grand canyon" down there and want the best option for putting everything back where it needs to be. My doctor implied this won't/can't happen should I choose my own ligaments. He was very vague and it's frustrating.... am currently seeking a new doctor.
