Uti 6 weeks post-hysterectomy - anyone else?

Today marks Week 6. I had a LAVH w/BIL Sal w/Lysis of adhesions & Cystoscopy.

I suspected something was not right yesterday- Thurs. Had my Post-op with Dr on Tues. Sure enough I had an Urinalysis this AM and I have a UTI. Worse one I have ever had. NOT FUN!

Was slated to return to work Tues but may need to hold off a few more days.

Anyone else have this experience?

I want to THANK everyone that has responded to my prior posts. This is an awesome WEBSITE and Support Group.

I appreciate all the help I have received with my questions, and hope everyone is doing well on their 6th week Post-OP

Personally, I never had a UTI after my surgery, but I have seen it in this forum many times. What commonly happens is that antibiotics used in the surgery indiscriminately kill off the good bacteria inside your urinary tract; in addition to what your doctor has prescribed, I would recommend a probiotic supplement, including the strain Lactobacillus acidophilus , to restore these good bacteria. Also if you like garlic, it functions as a natural antibiotic; you can also try the old standby of drinking cranberry juice. Here's hoping you'll be over this soon, and back on the road to recovery!

Re: Uti 6 weeks post-hysterectomy - anyone else?

It's one of those ironies that several aspects of surgery can foster infections of one variety or another. Catheterization, antibiotics as Tiger_eye mentioned, and just our anatomy make us prone to UTIs. Our article Do This - Not That: Preventing Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) has some additional tips for prevention once you get past this.

If you need to take some more time off because of this, get in touch with your doctor.

Re: Uti 6 weeks post-hysterectomy - anyone else?

Yes and OMG! I have never had a yeast infection or any bladder issues. I thought all my symptoms were surgery/healing related. When I went in for my 6-week check my doc ran my urine and then ran a culture and discovered some super bacteria. They told me it's some type that is commonly "caught" while in the hospital. No wonder I'd never had one. Lol. I had to go two rounds on a really strong antibiotic and even though my new tests are normal, I still don't feel great. I've never had to worry about being near a bathroom. Bladder of steel. But, now the minute I feel it, and I feel it often, I have to run to the bathroom. Best wishes for a speedy and strong recovery!
