WWYD? Need Post-Op Doctor Appt (kids mentioned)

Hi, guys!

I'm leaving Wednesday for my out of state surgery on Friday. I'm SO READY to get this over and done! This site has been invaluable in helping me prepare.

Background -- I have endometriosis and probably adenomyosis and have suffered for many years. Since having my second child and getting a period after weaning her, I've realized I can't live this way anymore. My regular doctor told me she will perform a da Vinci hyst but won't even attempt to take off the endo from my bowels and bladder. She brushed off my attempts to ask how a hyst would cure me and refused to write me a referral to the specialist I'm seeing in another state. This particular doctor is warm and caring, but she has a by-the-medical-book-approach.

I've been given the option of skipping the Post-Op appt. on Monday so I can return home on Sunday. I'm leaving my children with family members who have to work on Monday. I was told to see my regular doctor for the Post-Op appt.

Here is my question --

Do I see my regular ob/gyn who is upset I cancelled my hyst with her in order to have a LSH done by specialists?

Or do I make an appointment to see a new doctor (maybe at the teaching hospital nearby?) who knows nothing about me?

Or do I see my general practice doctor who I've known a long time and who actually wrote my referral to the out-of-state/network specialist for me?

As a side note, I plan to have the surgery and send the results to my old doctor with a letter (hopefully) telling her how much better I feel after the surgery, etc. Maybe it will make a difference to the next woman she treats who she really should refer to a specialist!

I'm not sure a doctor could be called warm and caring if she wouldn't give you a referrral. I'd finish my relationship with her. I don't think she's going to be too happy to see you after your op. I'd go back the the general doctor. He might know another local gyn.

I have to go to my pre op at the hosp that my surgery will be at. From what I can tell it's basic blood work, vitals, maybe a chest xray depending on your Dr's request and your age. If I were you I'd call my primary care Dr and she what they suggest. It's unfortunate that your OB/GYN is being so uncoop with you. I'd get this done and find a different Dr for the future. Good luck with your surgery though

I would go see my general Dr, and have them refer me to GYN too

Re: WWYD? Need Post-Op Doctor Appt (kids mentioned)

I agree with see the Dr who gave you the referral if you just can't manage the post op appt with the surgeon. Could you also arrange a post op phone appt Mon or Tues with the surgeon, to give you a chance to report in for questions? In fact, would an exam even be done Mon? Could it be a phone appt? My only appt was at 5 wks post op and if an early appt is for questions, some might be answered only by your surgeon. My Dr will set up an actual phone appt (not just a wait all day for a callback deal) and even if there's a charge, it's worth it. Phone + GP visit might be a good combo. But I'd avoid any GYN who won't give a referral, IMO that works against you. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery.

Great ideas - thank you so much!!! I agree about the ob/gyn. I don't trust her to take care of me anymore.
