pain after TVH

I'm now 1 week post-op and still having awlful pain. I had a tvh and was told (twice) by my nurse the day after surgery that with this type of hyster I should not be having any pain at all and treated me like I was crazy. She also failed at reinserting my catheter and pretty much said I was on my on to go. As a parting farewell she left a flush syringe in my IV site when removing my IV and never came back. After 2 attempts to call for help, she finally came and removed it after my hand and arm had swollen up to my elbow(took 5 days for the swelling to go down) and made a lame excuse that this happens all the time. My doctor wasn't much help and couldn't seem to figure out why I was in so much pain. Should I have been in pain after surgery or could something else be wrong. I feel alone in this and the hospital was a nightmare. Anyone else going through this?

tvh - pain levels

I had a tvh on 3/21/06. I also had a tvt sling. I was surprised at how manageable my pain was. I didn't have any problems with catheters though. I've read many posts regarding pain with bladder issues. I would think that by one week you should be feeling much better.
Do you have a slight fever? Have you called your doctor's office?
Hang in there.....

pain continued

Hi rockypoint:
I thought I was the only one still needing pain killers during the first few weeks. My gyne didn't give me enough pain killers and when my family doc took staples out on day 7 she gave me more. We did a little "Hurray" that the prescription would probably be my last, after years of managing period and other pain. I was still taking tylenol and some codeine 24/7 until 3 weeks; then I was on tylenol during day with codeine at night until five weeks. At 6 weeks until now (7.5 weeks) I am only on one tylenol at night. Maybe I would have been off painkillers sooner if I could manage anti-inflammatories, but my stomach can't take them after 25+ years. I also have fibromyalgia and I think I feel pain more.

So, check in with doc if you think something is wrong, but don't worry about having more pain than others. We are all different and heal at different rates. I can't believe now how much better I feel than I did at week one. I can jump out of a chair to answer the door with no pain. I can get out of bed normally and tying my shoes almost feels normal. Cheer up - things will only get better from here on!

pain after TVH

What type of pain are you having? I had a TVH the same day as you & I failed the voiding trial at the first attempt to remove my catheter & on the 2nd day after surgery it was successfully removed, BUT I started having terrible bladder pains & I couldn't stay off the toilet b/c it felt like I constantly had to pee. The docs thought it was just b/c my bladder was spasming & was irritated from the bladder repairs I had done & they gave me a toradol shot & a pyridium pill before I left the hospital. I thought I was gonna be ok after that, but after I got home I started feeling like I had to pee all the time again. Well, I finally went back to the doctor this morning & the nurse cathed me & got over 1500cc's of urine out of me! She had to dump her pan twice! I definitely wasn't emptying my bladder completely. I am home now with a foley catheter to let my bladder rest for a couple of days & will go back on Thursday to do another voiding trial. Other than this I haven't had much other pain. Just a little soreness in my nether regions. I'm sorry you had a bad experience at the hospital & with your doctor & nurses. Mine were ok, but they definitely didn't get in any hurry to do anything for me & I felt like I constantly had to remind them about my pain meds, etc.... Just call your doc & bug them to death until they give you the help & answers you need! Sometimes you just have to get downright rude with them to get what you need & want! s to you & let me know how things turn out!

thanks to all especially about the bladder emptying idea. I don't seem to be doing as much as I should when I go so maybe that's it..certainly something to think about and check into. thanks again and hugs to all.

pain after TVH

Hello!
I had my surgery the day after you one week ago today. I had TVH leaving the ovaries. I have had days where I have no pain but days where I hurt pretty good yesterday was my worst day since the surgery I could hardly walk. I am having some issue with my bladder it feels full all the time and when I go it hurts this real strong ache its awful! I called the doc she is having me bring in a urine sample and putting me on an antibiotic. Oh and this am I woke up puking no idea if its related to the hyst. (Anyone know??) I would definitely give your doc a call. Well I'm heading back to bed.

pain after TVH

I was in horrid pain in the hospital, and then at about 1 week was at the ER for more horrid pain. It turned out to be the start of a bladder infection. I think that with all the stiches up there, the bladder could make it very irritating.

I still don't think that your nurse was very nice, you still have major surgery!! I think you should give the doc a call and explain how much pain your in. Hang in there, I hope by next week things will be looking a lot better!

LVNLakers,

I would call your dr. if you started the antibiotics already you could be throwing up from them, you could have a virus, but you need to ask to be on the safe side!

pain after TVH

I'm in the same boat. I'm having pain and I think it's due to the bladder. I had problems with the cathider and they took it out the same night I had my suergery. I'm just feeling a little sore today but yesterday was bad. I'm going to give mine a few more days then call the dr if it don't get better!

pain after TVH

I had my TVH on the 22nd and definitely needed the meds to get by! The first night I was on Toradol delivered via IV and taking 2 percocet. I ended up buzzing the nurses every four hours. They were great and were clear that I was not to let the pain get ahead of me! I had a reaction to the percocet (itching) and was switched to Demerol until the doctor prescribed Darvocet. I stayed for the day and went home in the evening to make sure that the meds worked. I had gone through 20 and I still was having a hard time on the 28th so the doctor sent more. I have eight left. Feeling much better!

Everyone heals differently. My doc told me to expect pain. You are not crazy.
