Hear My TVH Story - Trouble Free!
Dear Sisters....
Im 43 years old and only recently started experiencing menstrual problems. (Menoragia) This was caused due to many small polyps inside my uterus. I had a DNC done 5 months ago and this did not help at all. So the doctor advised to wait several months to check if things improved. I had a light to medium period for almost
6 straight months. Needless to say the doctor recommended a partial hysterectomy.
I then went for a second opinion. I liked my second doctor better than my original - plus he specialized in polyps & fibroids. So he seemed to be the right choice. Most importantly, he was able to schedule me for surgery within 12 days. (The other doctor was too busy celebrating holidays - and wanted me to wait until
Jan. for surgery!)
Anyways, I was brave and actually wanted to end my problem before the new year. The doctor told me that if I had a vaginal hysterectomy it would be far less invasive, and less painful!
But - if I choose to go that way - then he had to remove the cervix as well (even though it was healthy).
I went ahead and decided to go with it - because I was afraid of getting an abdominal incision.
The surgery only lasted 35 minutes... fortunately without complications nor much blood loss. (My husband had donated blood but it was not used.)
I woke up apx 1 1/2 hours later connected to the morphine pump.
Honestly... I felt some light to moderate cramping similar to menstrual cramps. - I was afraid pain would increase so I pressed the pump 4 or 5 times during the first hour following
surgery. No need for the morphine after the first hour!!!
The great news is that... I really didn't experience much more pain or discomfort than that!!!!
Honestly - I don't know if it was a miracle of God, and a great doctor that I had, or the fact that it was done Vaginally and that
the ovaries were not touched.
If anyone there is preparing for surgery and you can have it done
vaginally... I recommend it 100%.
I had heard horror stories about the pain... and honestly.... for me... I honestly must say that it was really nothing..... A PIECE OF CAKE...... The hard part is staying home & waiting to heal....
Best Wishes to All New Sisters in Waiting.....
Please e-mail me if I can be of any help....
Love, Negri (Miami, Florida)

Hear My TVH Story - Trouble Free!
Thanks for an uplifting story!
I am headed to the castle on December 19. Other than my boss being a pain, I am getting excited about getting it all over with.
I'm scheduled for a Vaginal and leaving at least one ovary, so I'm hoping my expereince will be as smooth as yours was!
Remember to be a good princess and rest, even though you're feeling ok!

Pre & Post Op Tips - for New Princesses to Be
Dear Wendi,
I'm sure you'll do great too!
Just eat healthy starting 2 or 3 days before the surgery. Most importantly eat even healthier for the first 5 days after surgery.
I had no dairy products nor bread, rice or greasy foods. I was basically on light soups (no beans) jello and fruit baby foods. I also had healthy juices. This was great in keeping me feeling strong... but most importantly... NO GAS or GAS Pains!!!!
As soon as you feel up to it, after the surgery - don't be afraid to get up and walk a little. Even if its only around your room. I got up the next morning and was able to leave the hospital by the evening of the second day. (Honestly I was afraid of going home so soon - but the doctor said I was doing so well that I needed to go home!)
The only problem that I had in the hospital was that I was super "hyper" (thats part of my personality anyways) so all the lights and noises in the hospital didn't let me sleep at all the first night. But I swear - I didn't feel any pain. The second night - since I was home, I slept like a baby....
Moving around "slowly & carefully" and drinking a lot of water and liquids helps your body get back to normal faster.
I'm sure you'll do great too!!!! Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. I'll be home for the next couple of weeks resting and relaxing- that means lots of free time!!!
Best wishes, Negri

That's Great News!!!
Thanks for the uplifting story of your experience. I am a LIW scheduled for the same procedure on 12/11/02 which can't come soon enough. I had a d&c and diagnostic lap performed in 9/02 with no explanation for dysmenorhea & dysparenia (sp?), the doc said this was the only thing that would cure me. Of course a second opinion was in order and obtained. So I get to go to the castle next week and it is very welcomed after this 4 wk period - Argh!!! Not to mention the cramps are worse than labor in my opinion.
I have labored over my decision to proceed to the castle as it was my decision and I am glad I scheduled it. My fear was that I would really be down. I am glad to be doing it vaginally too as with your story it brings encouragement with an excellent attitude that I too can recover speedily. I want to get back to work and I don't want to take pain meds.
Keep me posted on how you are doing.

2 Weeks Post - Doing Great!
Dear M.
Two weeks ago today - I had my surgery. Fortunately, I've been blessed and continue to feel good. Honestly - I feel just as good as the day after the surgery. Of the entire bottle of prescribed pain killers - I only took one the first night to help me sleep - but not because of any pain. Hopefully your experience will be the same.
The only discomfort I have felt is with my bladder. It felt different as if it were swollen - and it hurt when I had to pee and right afterwards too. I told my doctor this when I went to my week after surgery check-up. He gave me a prescription for CIPRO - just in case to prevent any type of infection. It feels better but is still a little different than before the surgery. I guess it must still be swollen - but other than that - all the rest is ok.
I try not to do much more than walk around the house and go outside to get the mail. I drink a lot of water to help my body too.
This past Sunday, however I did go out to breakfast, church and to a friends house. My husband did all the driving. I was out longer than I had planned but honestly I felt fine.
Now I plan on relaxing at home during the week so again, I can go out next weekend. The key is not to over do it.
In getting ready for my surgery - I had lots of lists.
I stocked up on toilletries, (Panty Liners are great - I suggest you get 2 boxes- the other pads are two big - and hopefully like me - you will only need the lighter protection for right after the surgery) pet foods, groceries and things I needed to have. I also made arrangements for cleaning lady, and daily dinner deliveries from a caterer.
Personally, I like to fix my nails on a weekly basis - so I got arranged to have my manicure/pedicure 2 days before the surgery. (Nail polish on your hands should be clear - during surgery - but its ok to color your toes.) I also dyed my hair, and plucked my eye-brows right before surgery so I wouldn't have to worry about it for a while.
All of these things helped me keep my life relaxed and in order - plus it let me keep in control and run my house the way I like to run it - in an organized manner - even if its from my bed.
So my advise is... plan, plan, plan, eat light and healthy the couple of days before and after the surgery.
Plus pray and trust the Lord!!!
I'll pray for you too.
Best of luck!!! Negri

Hear My TVH Story - Trouble Free!
Hi Negri,
O.k. I have just decided you are my new hero. I am scheduled for a TVH on the 17th. of this month. Honestly my first d & c and removal of one fibroid freaked me out. This one I am acually looking forward to.
I just want my life back. Will be 35 this month (and for the rest of my life) and was glad to read of your recovery. I am also pretty active and have not been working out just because of pain, bleeding and being just plain tired and worn out.
I have a very trying 17 year old daughter who I am worried about minding the rules during recovery. She wasn't so good the previous time. But if my recovery is anywhere close to yours I should be on my toes for her. You made me feel good, thank you.

Hi Angela...
I'm glad to hear that I helped you feel less afraid... You will do fine...
I also have two teens... a 15 year old son who is in high school
and an 18 year old daughter in her first year of Jr. College.
My daughter is already driving and this helps relieve my husband and I - but in another way it brings more problems because she wants to go out and come back late and that is another big concern. She cant understand that I am not able to sleep until she returns... so enforcing the curfew is a big deal...
Maybe you can talk to her about staying home during the first 2 weekends of your recovery and maybe renting movies to watch with some friends at home. Explain to her that you are worried enough about your surgery and recovery without having the extra burden of worrying about her being out too.
I'm sure that she will understand. If anything - let her go out for a little while during the day, but not until late at night so you can sleep better!
I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have about my experience.
Today is my 15th day post surgery... and thank God I'm doing pretty good. My old clothes - pants, jeans etc. still fit even though my tummy is still swollen. That made me feel good. Today my hubby is driving me to my beauty salon for my first manicure after surgery. Hurray!!!! - and tonight we are going to a parent dinner at my sons school.
I plan on sitting eating, talking and relaxing. No dancing for now.... but at least I'm glad I will be able to attend.....
Keep up your positive thoughts about your surgery... plan all the details.... do your shopping beforehand.... and all should go smooth.
PS the afternoon before you have to be on a liquid diet and on this stong laxative to cleanse your intestines out. You will be so involved with that that you wont have too much time to think.....
Best Regards, Negri
