When did you feel up to travelling post-hysterectomy
I am 4 weeks out.I have restrictions for at least 2 more weeks.I am really wanting to go to FL and recuperate at the beach. The beach is my happy place. I could fly or drive. I could stay with my mother in law and we get along fine. I would have to take my daughters with me (14,10, and 6) Unfortunatly DH cannot go. I just want to sit on the shore and relax and heal. I had a whirlwind surgery (emergency D&C and transfusion followed by hysterectomy 2 weeks late) I need time and space to process it all. Right now I don't think Ill ever feel up to traveling again. :/ *sigh*

Re: When did you feel up to travelling post-op
How long would the flight be? I would ask your doctor. I dont plan on flying for quite a while as I just dont want to risk jeopardizing my recovery. I read on another board of a woman who did take a flight about 4 weeks post-op and ended up in ER as she picked up luggage and must have popped a stitch and bled profusely...why take a chance of something like that happening? better to be safe than sorry..just my take..

Re: When did you feel up to travelling post-op
After 6 weeks I can do what I feel up to as long as I listen to my body and take it slow. the flight would be a couple hours. Im not planning a trip I was just wondering when others felt up to travelling......6 weeks?, 8 weeks? longer?

I felt good to travel at 2 1/2 months. We travelled when I was 3 1/2 months out.

TopGrl,
I completely understand your feelings about wanting to relax at the beach while you finish recovering. You didn't have that period of time that most of us have while pre op... Time to prepare, and to process. Surgery is a traumatic event and it is a lot to deal with physically, mentally, and emotionally I think quiet time at the beach with the fresh air and time with your kids sounds heavenly.
If you do choose to fly, make sure your doctor is aware (even if your restrictions have been lifted). Here is an article with some tips: Travelling: Airplanes

When did you feel up to travelling post-hysterectomy
I went on a holiday overseas for a week with the family 9 weeks after surgery. It all went well but everyone is different.

Re: When did you feel up to travelling post-hysterectomy
Do you mean now or at 6 weeks? At 3 weeks I drove myself 3 hrs to visit a cousin who lives on the lake. It was great, but I couldn't swim yet. Otherwise all was good

Re: When did you feel up to travelling post-hysterectomy
Im not up to going now. I was thinking 6 weeks at the soonest. If I drove I would do it in 2 days. It can be done in a single day but it s a long day, much too long for me right now.

When did you feel up to travelling post-hysterectomy
You may feel well enough at 6 weeks. It's hard to say as we are all so different. How much time do you have off work? Maybe aim for 7-8 weeks to be on the safer side.

Re: When did you feel up to travelling post-hysterectomy
I understand your desire to physically be at a happy place, but it's very important to consider every aspect of traveling whether it's by car or air.
I'm just over a month po (5 wks) and I have no problem going out for the day but it involves a lot of resting and sitting and by the end of the day my body is fed up. If I move around too much or do too much I end up w/ swelly belly and abdominal pains and cramps, which can hamper any enjoyable experience.
I think it also depends on how capable your kids are. Are your older ones able to watch and take care of your younger one? Will they be able and willing to do all your lifting for you and walk at your pace?
I don't know what po restrictions you have, but you need to follow them to a T for your own safety.
This is definitely something to run by your doctor. Your doctor has the final say in this ; )
I'm actually planning a similar trip. My family and I will be going on a mini vacation when I'm about 7wks po and I am a bit anxious about it. I'll still be on all my restrictions, I won't be able to swim or lift anything heavy and it will be a very long car ride for me so I know we're going to have to take a few stops along the way for my comfort.
