my surgeon has not given me an official exam...

Hello,

I have an appoinment with my gynecologist / surgeon to schedule a LSH, but she has never actually performed a gynecological exam on me. Is this a normal part of the process? My appoinment is tomorrow at 2 pm, so I apologize for the last-minute question. But if anyone out there can shed some light on the proper protocol, this would ease my mind...

Thank you

if she has never performed an exam on you, how does she know you need a hysterectomy? when i was scheduled for my lsh i had been examined, had a hysteroscopy and d&c, all the pre-op biopsies and an ultrasound with fluid.

I'm a little confused. Have you ever seen this GYN before? If so then they already know what is going on, or did you last Doc forwarded your records? If not, well... I don't know. I scheduled an appt with a GYN specialist, had all my old records sent to her office along with all biopsies and labs. When I met her we went through my history and she did an exam, then set up my surgery date that day.

I took my last ultrasound, trans-vaginal procedure and a ca-125 blood test. I took that to my first visit with her last November.

Just my but nobody would be cutting me open without a physical exam.

Just doesn't sound right to me, it is like they would be going in there blind.

I have never met a surgeon yet that trusted someone else's diagnosis or didn't want to do their own tests.

But I suppose one question you should be asking yourself is how comfortable you feel with this particular surgeon.......

Let us know how you get on and what you decide,

Hugs

Ok one easy way to settle this for yourself might be to just call the doctors office and ask. For all you/we know she may be waiting for this next appointment to examine you and then if needed set the surgery date. If not, for your own sake get another opinion from a new doctor.

Let us know how things go,

my surgeon has not given me an official exam...

I go to a medical clinic where all of my doctors are under the same roof (regular doctor, nurse practioner, gyn, eye doctor, etc.).

My nurse practioner did my annual gyn exam (I prefer a female), ordered an ultrasound, and once the results were back, referred me to the gyn/surgeon.

He ordered another ultrasound to see if the cyst was growing (it was), and then did an endometrial biopsy in his office (that was painful!).

After those tests, we met and went over the results, talked about my heavy bleeding, and he gave me my options (cyst removal and ablation or cyst removal and hysterectomy). I decided on the cyst removal and hysterectomy (45 years old, decided it was the best thing for me).

My regular doctor did my pre-op appointment for the hospital paperwork, not the gyn.

Maybe you need to see what happens at the appt. and ask questions. Every doctor and clinic is different on how they handle pre-op, etc.

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback.

I totally "get" where Katy (Matymoo) is coming from, and that was definitely my first reaction. So I became a little proactive by making a list of Questions, and taking it (along with my husband) to the appointment today.

My general physician sent the trans-vaginal and ultrasound results in November of last year to her. When I was first diagnosed , this current obgyn did not offer cyroendemetrial ablation ( a freezing technique). So after the initial diagnosis I did research and found another obgyn that did. (dr.#2)

I had that done this past July, the outcome was not what I had hoped, although now my periods are more predicatable they still last anywhere from 12-14 days with 2 or 3 of those days housebound. (pain, flooding, soaking of pads 1-2 hours etc.)

So I went back today (with hubby and questions) to the first obgyn who offered me laprascopic supracervical hysterectomy, (not the cryoabalation) to schedule surgery. It seems I had an HPV and a pap smear with the ablation, and everything looked good.

I did ask her anyway (no matter how stupid it may have sounded) why she had not done a physical examination and her explanation was that both her and Dr. Cryoablation worked each other shifts and are on-call for one another at the hospitals where they perform their surgeries, and she said she always had Dr. Cryo's notes to refer too if needed.

The Doctor is going to call me back to schedule LSH.

Still searching for a good gynecologist....

to treat abnormal bleeding.

I am at my wits end. When my 1st doctor gave me hysterectomy as an option i sought a second opinion. I had no idea that the doctors I went to covered for one another. The second doctor gave me an option the first did not "cryoblation", I also asked about supracervial laparscopic hysterectomy which is what the first doctor gave as an option. The second doctor said " I don't do "supracervial laparscopic hysterectomy" and leave the cervix. Both my ovaries and cervix have been declared healthy. So when the cryoblation didn't work I went back to Doctor # 1. I asked questions, took my husband so that he also would understand the procedure. When a week went by and we didn't hear from her, I called the office the receptionist said she never got my chart to schedule. She said she would talk to the doctor and have her call me. I still haven't heard. is this normal?

I have a real bad feeling about all of this....
Both doctors have websites and they make is seem so simple....b/c of the bleeding i lost my job....my "bleeding" condition did not go over well at work...Help
