travel plans thwarted??
I just found out a week ago that I am going to need TAH and probably BSO and that the earliest my gyn can do the surgery is Feb. 11. I have also had reservations for a trip to Japan for months now. It is a lifelong dream of mine to visit Japan, and now I will be barely 5 weeks post-op when we are scheduled to leave. My Dr. says I should be fine by then, but I am a little scared.
Any thoughts? I can't reschedule this trip because I am a teacher and it is the only time I can go, plus the tickets are paid for and non-refundable.

travel plans thwarted??
Hi
If your DR has said ok, you should be ok. BUT even then you can't be carrying luggage, your purse will be about it. Don't try to put anything in the overhead bin. You will need to keep hydrated (so drink lots of water) and also get up and walk around the plane as much as possible during the flight.
Just in case you don't feel up to the trip: did you use a credit card to buy your tickets? Sometimes they automatically add travel insurance, which means you can cancel and while you may not get all your money back you can get most of it.
Or, is there anyway to postpone your surgery til summer vacation?
Best wishes!

travel plans thwarted??
Hi Julia Gosh, I had that exact same situation two years ago, except that my trip was six and a half weeks after my surgery.
Is there any way you can postpone the surgery until after your trip? I was able to make my trip, but there were some tense moments there when it didn't look good; and while I had a great time, I did get very tired at the end of each day. I don't think I could have done it a week and a half earlier, and I know my DR wouldn't have let me even if I'd wanted to try.
Scheduling your surgery five weeks before your trip, you are betting on having an easy, uneventful surgery and early recovery period. Of course we all hope that happens, but speaking as one who had some trouble, it's a risky proposition.
If you can possibly go on your trip before your surgery, as long as you are not in debilitating pain (I don't know the reason for your surgery), you will have a better time and be more able to walk around for longer each day while you're there.
You are going to love Japan! It was the best trip I have ever taken in my life and I hope some day to go back again.
Good luck!
s,
-Linda

travel plans thwarted??
Thanks to both of you for the great advice. As soon as I read your replies I tried to call my Dr. but her office is closed for the holidays and she is going on a mission to Africa in January. That's why my surgery isn't til Feb. 11. She gets back Feb. 9.
Now I am thinking it might be better to wait til summer to do this if these ridiculous fibroids stop growing so fast. On the other hand, I am so tired and cranky all the time as it is and I would probably be worse by March 20 without surgery.
I am planning to spend the month of January taking care of my health and getting in shape at the gym, doing yoga, quitting my wine and watching my diet. Hopefully that will help my recovery. The Dr. wasn't concerned about my trip in the least and seemed to think I'd be in traveling shape by then. My DH will just have to haul all the bags!!

travel plans thwarted??
My sister had a baby 1000 miles away just a few days after my surgery. I struggled with a fever for about 3 weeks, but 2 days after it was gone I hopped on a plane by myself to see my first neice. I asked my doctor's permission and he said it was fine to go. I did get help with the luggage (its only money!) and I did arrange to ride on the little shuttle at the airport instead of walking such a great distance to a different terminal but I could've walked fine too - just didn't want to wear myself out too much. Thats about the point I started feeling guilty for being on sick leave, but the doctor DID say that I was supposed to stay off 6 weeks (I ended up just taking 5 'cuz of the guilt!).

Can You Wait?
I had the first trip planned in years to ski in Colorado with my husband and three boys in Feb, but opted for surgery Dec 5th. One reason was work issues, the holidays were better for taking off (I am in sales), but I think I also was nervous and just wanted to be done with it. I thought I would be fine by Feb, but just cancelled my trip because I know now this will take some time and pushing it will not be good for my family or me. Japan is a big trip and worth a lifetime of memories. If you can put it off safely, I might suggest that possibilty. Best wishes! LM

catch 22
The surgical bookings office at the "castle" is closed until mid Jan so my surgery cannot be scheduled until sometime late Jan early Feb
My husband and I have been planning our first trip away alone in our seven years together, (in early March) an effort to put our relationship back on track as my health has put an immense strain on both of us
I could put the surgery off until after we get back, but I don't know whether I can enjoy a holiday when I feel so crappy
My initial surgery date was meant to be mid Dec otherwise I would never have planned to go away
AAAARRRGGGHH!

travel plans thwarted??
I have been fretting even more about this since I got a call yesterday from a friend in Seattle who of course knows someone who had a bad recovery period. They tell me to either postpone the trip or the surgery. I won't be able to speak with the Dr. since she is in Africa, but her office is open next week and I will see what they say.
I got my Japan tickets on Hotwire and they were cheap, but no way can I get a refund. I was looking at my calendar, and was thinking, why not have surgery after my last concert(I am a school orchestra teacher) and take off the last 3 weeks of school before summer vacation when we are in down mode anyway?
Thanks so much for all the support. It is dark and cold in Alaska and I can't wait for spring!

(((Julia))), if you can manage it, having the surgery after your trip sounds like a great idea!
Hang in there, sunnier days ahead!
