4 days post hysterectomy...what a nightmare

I have not really felt well enough to figure out this website, but I know I need support. I went in at 6am on Tues the 16th to have a laporascopic hysterectomy to remove two lemon sized fibroids removed. One was inside my uterous and the other on the outside and dr thought it would take less than two hours. My Dr. was going to leave my ovaries and cervix and I was to stay just overnight at the surgery center.
Well when I woke< I found out it took her three hours and when she put her scope through my belly button she couldnt even see what she had to deal with. She said my utereous looked like a pineapple it was so enlarged and completely filled up with the fibroid she couldnt even see where to cut. So...I woke to a big abdominal incision. Ok, so I knew that could be a possiblity. But by 10pm the nurses had made numerous calls to the dr. At this point she came back and made a decision to call 911 to transfer me to the Hospital down the street. I kept having aweful whole body tremors and was soaking the bedding but had no fever, bllod pressure was low (I have high blood preassure) and very high heart rate. Its all a blur to me but there I was at the ER being admitted to ICU because my blood work was all out of whack showing very high white blood cell count. A CT scan showed I was septic (sepsis)--infection in blood. Also, that I had aquired pnemomia. I was perfectly healthy when I went in for hystectomy. Somehow, I had aspirated during surgery, hadnt eaten since 6pm the night before. Apparently this can happen in less than 1% of surgeries. Lucky me. So fast forward a couple days. Loads of IV antibiotics and fluids, I begged to leave hospital last night. I was so uncomfortable. They did let me come home last night with oral antibiotics and I slept well and have rested today. Im a bit concerned cuz my heart rate is still running high and by blood preasure is 162/109. I dont want to call because I will refuse to go back to the hospital. So this is my hysterectomy story 4 days out. It can only get better from here, right?
I just want Tues to get here so I can get to see my dr. She was concerned about alot of bruising all around my insision and said she may have to open and drain it. Noooooooooooo...I'm so over all of this. Sorry my post is such a downer. Going to read more of your stories for positives. Hugs and recovery to all. Ruth

Re: 4 days post op...what a nightmare

I'm sorry your hysterectomy experience has been such a nightmare so far! Unfortunately major surgery such as this comes with some serious risks. I am sending you hugs and prayers for the rest of your recovery to be uneventful and smooth.

Please consider joining your recovery group, here is the link. This is your place to post updates on your progress as you heal. It's a great place to give/get support from women who had surgery the same week as you.

Please be sure to call your doctor immediately if something doesn't feel "right".

Re: 4 days post hysterectomy...what a nightmare

I'm surprised you are home so quick after being septic. They often keep you longer. I'm assuming you're still on antibiotics. Please keep an eye on your BP and other symptoms. Your BP can be higher due to pain and the stress but that's quite high. Are you on meds for it? I do think you need to be seen if you're not on meds. Not to scare you but you are higher risk for clots being post op and now your BO being elevated. Please listen to your body and go back to hospital if need be. Hugs to you. Hopefully all just settles and your recovery gets easy from now on.
