stairs after surgery

I am having an abdominal hysterectomy and have been told I will be in hospital 3 - 4 days. just occurred to me I may have to plan where to hang out or sleep when I get home.. we have an older home with thirteen steep stairs leading up to the bedroom. how are stairs after abdominal surgery, will I be able to do them. I am thinking I may hang out all day downstairs and just go up to bed when husband is home to help or will I even be able to do that first few days.

Re: stairs after surgery

I have stairs too. I'm just going to go up slowly, one stair at a time holding onto the rails with both hands. It shouldn't be too bad if you take it slow but if you can wait until someone is home when you do it might be safest. I have no choice so I'll just have to go up nice and easy.

Re: stairs after surgery

I have 13 stairs to deal with and my only bathroom is up there along with the bedroom. This was a major concern when I came home from my spine surgery. I managed to scale the stairs by walking sideways and balancing my weight between the wall and banister. The trick is to make sure both feet are on a stair before going to the next one. Take your time and you will do fine. You could mention the stars to the hospital and they may have physio come and see you. I had to show them I could climb stairs before I was allowed to go home. I think I will do the same after this surgery

Re: stairs after surgery

I had a TAH/BSO and was released from the hospital on my third day after surgery. They offered me the option to stay for fourth day, but I was already walking laps around the ward, so I declined it. In your case, you may want to accept if you have that option, because it's one more day of healing without stairs?

My apartment is on the ground floor, but on Day 5, I was out walking my (older, sedate) cat, and he decided he wanted to go up one flight of stairs to the fire escape. I held onto the railing with one hand both for balance and to help pull myself up. We both took it slowly, and it was fine, going both up and down.

*Do* mention the stairs when you discuss your potential release with your doctor, as this is an important factor. Also, yes, you may well want to limit trips up and down by spending the day downstairs. Be sure to arrange a comfy "day nest" for yourself downstairs before you leave for the hospital. I made one in my living room because my bedroom's very dark during the day.
