Belly pillow for hysterectomy recovery?
I've read several different times to have a belly pillow, what is that and why is it needed?

Re: Belly pillow?
I used an ordinary pillow at home and a smaller travel pillow when in a car. It is useful when you have to cough or sneeze or laugh. You hold against the tummy to hold the muscles tight so it doesn't hurt. When in a car it is useful when going over bumps and you can hold it tight and the muscles don't move causing pain. It is just to hold it all in when needed. I am sure some people didn't needed but I certainly did as I caught a cold and it was great to hold the muscles against the tummy without straining. I guess it is a personal preference.

Re: Belly pillow?
I agree with Cinl11 that a pillow was really a big help for all the specifics she mentioned. I had just a small but well cushioned pillow for the long ride home from the hospital and it really helped over the bumps in the road and for any short sudden stops.
I purchased a long body pillow - they sell them for pretty reasonably in Walmart, Bed Bath and Beyond and Target. I loved mine because I couldn't sleep on my poor stomach so this made lying on my side much more comfortable. You can also experiment with several small pillows to see what you prefer.
Best of luck on your upcoming surgery.

What they said It's great for holding things in place when you cough, sneeze or laugh. I use mine in between my belly and the seatbelt too since I'm still really tender. It's also great for protecting you from people bumping you, or even you bumping yourself lol. And it's a visual reminder to them. I have several for sleeping, to hold against me and to go between my knees. Good luck with your surgery!!

Re: Belly pillow for hysterectomy recovery?
Pillows are great for holding against your belly when going from a lying-down to a standing position or vice versa and when turning over in bed. Also, I can't sleep on my back, so I held a pillow against my belly and slept on my side. The hospital bed had two pillows on it, so I used one for a belly pillow. When I got home, I used a throw pillow.
Also, for the ride home the friend who was giving me a ride brought a small, flat pillow to go between my belly and the seatbelt. This was also useful when her truck went over potholes, etc.

Re: Belly pillow for hysterectomy recovery?
I have to agree with everyone. This will be my 4th abdominal surgery and cannot live without my tummy pillow post-op. I found it also helps with getting in and out of bed the first few days.
Hope your surgery goes well, prayers and HUGS for you.
