Constipation Medicine

I would like to know which one is the best medicine for constipation after surgery without upsetting the stomach.
Normally I am very constipated and I use to take metamucil for many years and I think the body got use to it and this does not work for me anymore so I started taking Grapefruit juice and it seems helping, but I think I am going to need something that really will make myself go completely liquid, I am afraid of the pain if it comes out solid.

Hey Alina,

Sorry to hear about the BM issues. Been there!!

I drank warmed prune juice. It wasn't my favorite thing, but I think it helped with the plumbing issues.

I also took Magnolax. It is a gentle (key word) laxative and for me, it worked well.

You could try to incorporate more fiberous foods into your diet. And drink lots and lots and lots of WATER !!! This, I believe is a key component to the success of a BM!

Good luck.

Check with your doctor about the grapefruit juice - I understand it can interfere with some medications

The doctor put me on Colace in the hospital and I'm taking a stool softener (Walmart brand) once a day at home now. I have terrible constipation and it seems to work pretty well - along with a lot of water to drink!

Constipation Medicine

My doctor suggested 1 tablespoon of mineral oil mixed into yogurt or oatmeal each day. I've been using it since surgery and it works like a charm. Plus, it's natural and doesn't cause cramping.

One word - Miralax( or Glycolax generic)! Its the miracle cure! My obgyn prescribed it and it basically just adds water to the stool - doesn't give you cramps, you just go effortlessly. It is non-habit forming and my ob (as well as gastro dr) said I could take it my entire life and not worry. Its a tasteless powder you mix in water/juice and drink in the AM. It is nothing like the texture of metamucil - it completely dissolves and you don't even know you're drinking it. It has made my recovery sooo much better - one less thing to worry about. I could eat all the prunes in the world or eat fiber cereal from here to eternity and it never helped my constipation. Hope this helps.

Hi Alina,

I myself took colace and within hours, I had a bm. The Dr. told me to take 1 with each meal, I did that for 3 days and I was miserable. I was so constipated. I got desperate and the daily max is 6 pills and I took them all at one time and within 3 hours, I was golden. I had mild diarreah the next day but it was well worth it. Good luck!
