Why did I gain 5 lbs while in the hospital for IFE?
Hello. I am glad I've found this great site.
I am 39 years old, and I'd been diagnosed with fibroids (2cm?) for over 1 1/2 years. I have been on the generic version of ortho-cyclen (mono-nessa), and have had really heavy, crampy periods. I also have bled heavily in-between periods about twice in the past 2 years.
My doc took a biopsy of my uterus, and it was not found to be cancerous.
Last Monday, about 1 1/2 weeks after I ended my last period, I started bleeding. It got progressively worse, until I was passing huge clots (apple-sized) and a great deal of blood. By Wednesday night, I had my husband take me to the ER, b/c I was worried I might bleed to death. I was feeling dizzy, weak, and sick. They still discharged me, and 3 hours later I passed out at home and had to call 911.
I ended up getting the IFE, mostly to stop the excessive hemmoraging. It went okay, considering I'd been admitted to the er 3 times in one day, had blood drawn numerous times, was severely anemic, and almost bled to death.
I was on pain killers all day Friday (IFE was Thursday night), had to have a blood transfusion, and continual IV drip.
My question at this point is, why have I gained 5 lbs. from being in the hospital? I barely ate, and I'm wondering if it was the IV fluids or what. I am also a very active person and hate to be on my back, but I'm grateful recovery is only about a week. I am also very grateful I didn't bleed to death and that I am now home from the hospital (as of yesterday afternoon).
I am pretty bloated/distended and am really worried about the weight gain. If anyone has had similar experiences with post-op IFE, or any info., PLEASE write back.
Thank you very much,
Kelley

Re: Why did I gain 5 lbs while in the hospital for IFE?
Have you let your doctor know that you are concerned about the bloating and distention of your belly? I ask because after my hysterectomy I had a large bulge on the right side of my stomach. It ended up being not normal as was evidence of internal bleeding! Your condition could be completely normal but whenever you have doubts, it is a good idea to check with your doctor!
Many people gain weight during a hospitalization from IV fluids and swelling. Likely that is why you have the extra five pounds.
I hope your recovery goes well for you and you are soon on your feet! Take care of yourself!

Re: Why did I gain 5 lbs while in the hospital for IFE?
Thanks for your response, Weiser. I just saw one of the doctors, and he said my belly was distended b/c of all the stress of losing blood and the operation. A nurse I spoke with also told me the fluids should flush themselves out. I am just grateful I am not bleeding anymore, and to be alive.
Hugs back,
Kelley

Re: Why did I gain 5 lbs while in the hospital for IFE?
Hello again, to anyone who reads this post.
I have since lost that 5 lbs., and I feel silly for being so vain, when I almost died from blood loss. But I called the nurse, and she told me the 5lbs. was indeed the IV fluids I received in the hospital for 3 days.
Today I went on a 30-minute walk. I also drove 1/2 hour each way and got my hair cut and colored.
It's only been four days since my UFE and I'm feeling much better. Not anywhere near 100%, but better. I want anyone who reads this to have hope and know that there is hope after hospital.
Cheers,
Kelley
