date sister
We share our "do it" date. My DH was able to get two days off but does not deal well with hospitals. He tends to phase out. He will be there after surgery until I send him home then not come back until pick up time on day 2. Best of luck , I'll be thinking of you.

the waiting
These ladies are right, the waiting is the hardest part.
I, too, spent alot of castle time alone as DH is a store manager and had to work. The nurses kept me company, so I did fine. My nurses were so wonderful that I sent them a card when I got home.
Hang in there. You will do fine. Feel free to PM me if you like.
God bless,
Lené

Lonely
Burnsy, I was in the same boat as you. DH works 2000 to 0800, 4 on 4 off. The hospital is a 1 1/2 drive round trip. He dropped me off, went home for sleep. He called the nurses station to see how things went. He did manage to visit the next day, for about an hour. I called and woke him on the 4th day, to come and get me NOW.
In all honesty, even if he'd been there after I came back to my room, I would have cared less. I was much more interested in the nurses, who bathed me. Did that feel good!!! Then I was in do-do land.
During recovery, I walked the halls, joked with the nurses at their station, utilized their kitchen to make myself tea, and did all I could to prove I was ready to be released. (I hate Castles).
DH had 4 days off in a row when I came home, and he catered to me hand and foot. I slept on the couch, initially, and for the first 2 nights, he made up a bed on the floor beside me.
I know it's hard with shift workers, but , look at this way. He was there when I REALLY needed help..like getting on and off the toilet, as we don't have wall bars in place giggle. I KNOW you're DH will make up the time to you.
I'll be thinking of you. As they say, it's the waiting that gets to you. You should get out and treat yourself. Hairdressers? Massage?
Feel free to contact me.
Cheers Georgy

Lonely
I enjoyed having my husband with me prior to going into the OR - but seriously, they can't be with you all the time. You're getting prepped, asked all kinds of medical questions, etc. When you come up from recovery, you're asleep most of that day.
The time I really needed my DH was when I had to go back into the hospital with a bacterial infection. Since we were told to come down immediately (an hour away), it was midnight before we got there. DH slept on the pull-out bed in my room that night.
Next night, he'd gone home and my fever spiked again. They added another antibiotic to my IV and I was left alone in a dark room. That was totally scary. I've said it was just God and me in that room then and I couldn't quite see Him. I even got up by myself and got a cold wash rag to put on my forehead until my fever broke.
That's probably the loneliest I've ever been in my life.
