Keep cervix or not?

2 yrs DUB and menstrual pain. Time to just do it. I am having either LSH or TLH. Is there any advantage to keeping cervix for any reason?
and how long until I can resume aerobic fitness. I am a Zumba junkie.

Thank you!

Re: Keep cervix or not?

I asked my doc about that --- he said has no play in quailty of sex (but he's a man) and it plays no role in support --- he asked if I wanted to keep getting paps and I'd still have the possibility of cervical cancer. I figured he could just take it w/everything else after reading/research.

Re: Keep cervix or not?

Some people can still get spotting or mini periods if the cervix is still in.

Re: Keep cervix or not?

My Gyn said lets get rid of it. She said if it stays, there is still a chance of someday having cervical cancer. I say if I don't need it-take it. She said she always recommends getting it out if you are taking the uterus.

Re: Keep cervix or not?

Thank you for the responses. To clarify I have had dysfunctional uterine bleeding and pain (probably due to endometriosis) for 2 yrs. The doc has offered supra cervical or total lap hysterectomy. I have heard removing cervix has sexual side effects but cannot confirm if this is true. I am also very active and concerned about recovery time. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Keep cervix or not?

Today, I had my pre-op appointment, surgery on Tuesday. My doctor suggested that I take out my cervix. I don't want the surgery period. Ugh. Does taking out the cervix impact your sex life?

Re: Keep cervix or not?

I had total hysterectomy, uterus and cervix. Sex felt "different" the first few times (but I think alot of it was nerves) but I can say 3.5 months later - its as good if not better than it was before

Re: Keep cervix or not?

I had my TVH a couple of weeks ago and my cervix was removed. I feel great just two weeks post op and I too love working out. I physically feel great and my recovery has been uncomplicated thus far.

Keeping your cervix subjects you to having mini periods even after the hyst so you must ask yourself if you're okay with that.

As for sex, I've yet to cross that bridge but I've read threads here from our sisters that having the cervix removed didn't change how sex felt for them.

Re: Keep cervix or not?

Just my I asked to keep my cervix for now because I've typed up enough OB/GYN cases of pelvic floor issues, and supposedly if you leave the cervix in it lessens the risk/delays pelvic floor issues like prolapses, etc. That's about the only reason I'm doing it. At 34 I'm not ready to start dealing with pelvic floor issues in a few years.

As for spotting/mini periods, I'm okay with them if they happen, I guess. Although I've been getting them every few months, so I wonder if I'll be getting them at all now? Guess we'll see.

Just discuss it with your doctor. I suppose you could leave it, and if you change your mind you can then take it out. Good luck!
