Ovaries

Im scheduled for surgery on December 23. My doctor wants to remove my cervix but keep my ovaries. She says that if my ovaries are removed I will go straight into menopause. I just wanted to know if that has any truth to it because I have been told that removal of the cervix is what sends you straight to menopause. Please help

Re: Ovaries

Your hormones are produced by your ovaries. I've heard a lot of people say that if you can keep your ovaries then it's best to do so. Your body will still take time to adjust to the removal of your cervix and uterus but your ovaries will keep you from going into menopause. Your cervix doesn't produce any hormones. I hope this helped a bit.

Re: Ovaries

Hi Mrs DJW -

((Kim1203)) is correct- your ovaries are what produce the hormones. If you keep them, you will not go into surgical menopause. Your cervix is the neck of the uterus, and does not produce hormones. Here is some information on hysterectomies.

Keeping your ovaries is a good idea, if you can. I did not have a choice and lost mine, but would have kept them if I could have. Here two articles you might want to read:
Should I Keep My Ovaries?
Oophorectomy Health Risks

Hope this helps.
