Anyone else scared about pain meds BEFORE hysterectomy?
I am already taking 2 10mg Percocet every four hours for my pain and I'm terrified about how I will feel after the surgery...I don't know how to talk to my doctor about this and I feel like I am becoming addicted. Is anyone else feeling this way? I am so scared of the entire thing. I feel like I won't be a woman anymore and I am so ashamed of myself and my body for doing this even though I know it's out of my control.

Re: Anyone else scared about pain meds BEFORE hysterectomy?
I'm not in pain now, so I don't have any input about the meds, but there's nothing to be ashamed of! You will still be the same person as you are now - you'll just be healthier and able to live life more fully. If you are in this much pain now, you will likely feel much better after your recovery.
Its natural to be afraid; I think most of us are as we face this (or any) surgery. It might help to talk with your doctor about your fears, or if you are a person of faith, prayer can help.

Re: Anyone else scared about pain meds BEFORE hysterectomy?
I haven't had my hysterectomy yet, and I am not currently on pain meds, just muscle relaxers, but I had surgery for cancer almost 5 years ago and was on pain meds for a very long time, years. From what I have heard from a lot of people, you feel much better after surgery if you are in pain pre-op. Don't feel ashamed! If you're in pain, then you're doing what you need to do to manage it, and it will be managed post-op. Try to think about the time when you won't need pain meds anymore, which isn't too far off!
I'm also afraid, but I try to think of how much better I feel once the surgery is over with and I am on the road to recovery.

Hi Dalidot -
All of your fears are completely normal. First off, you should not be ashamed of what is happening to you. Sometimes bad things happen to very good people. I understand the feelings and fears of not feeling like a woman after this surgery. But what makes you a woman is not your uterus, it is what is in your heart, mind and soul. Those are untouched by this surgery. . I do understand how you feel, because I have had those same feelings. They have lessened with time, however.
Regarding pain: After surgery, pain can really very from person to person. Here is an article that may give you some information:
How Long Will the Pain Last after Hysterectomy?
You can talk to your doctor if you are concerned about becoming addicted. My understanding is that is pretty rare. And, your pain will lessen fairly quickly once your surgery is done.
Know you are not alone in this. We are here to help and support you.

Anyone else scared about pain meds BEFORE hysterectomy?
They have me on 10mg Percocet and I am taking way more than I'm supposed to because it isn't relieving my pain. I know I'm addicted to them and that is stressing me out so much on top of the emotions and fears coming along with my surgery. My tolerance for these things is so high that I don't know how I'm going to keep my pain controlled after the surgery. I am so beyond frustrated with my body and so angry that this is happening

Re: Anyone else scared about pain meds BEFORE hysterectomy?
I know how frustrating and scary it is. I became tolerant to the medication I was on and needed to take more in order for it to work. I would talk to your doctor and tell him/her that you've become tolerant to the dosage of medications that they have prescribed and that you're concerned about pain management after your surgery. They might be able to put you on another medication that will be more effective for pain management. I would try to titrate back down to the dosage that you're prescribed for now so you don't have withdrawals if they do put you on a different medication. They might even be able to put you on a different medication now to manage your pain.
Just keep your doctor informed on what's going on with you so they know and can help you manage pain effectively after surgery. I still have a high tolerance for medications and I make sure that my doctors know what I have become tolerant to, and have been able to find effective ways to manage my pain.
You can also try some turmeric tea, turmeric helps with inflammation. Also look up foods that help with pain and inflammation and try to eat as much of them as you can.

If you feel you are addicted, or you have become too tolerant, please talk to your doctor. There are plenty of options out there, but you have to communicate with him or her.
