Hello. I'm glad I found this place. It was recommended by two friends actually. They both told me this site was very informative.

Although I have been lurking and reading for awhile I'm still unsure of what all the codes are.

I'm scheduled for October 5th (to be confirmed later day) for my hysterectomy. My Gyno had mentioned he wanted to do a vertical cut... I asked if he couldnt (please) open up one of my many horizontal ones. He did indicate that was something he could do but the surgery would take longer and I was at risk for additional complications.

I had my Ablation done back in April. Wasnt successful. I suffer from heavy periods that last forever and come with pain that starts a week before and just climbs the further into my bleeding I get. I also had my tubes tied at that time. Seems that this surgery is my only option. He is planning to leave my ovaries in... despite the fact that I am also having trouble with severe PMS for the first time in my life (I am 41)

I had a Myomectomy back when I was 24 for a very large fibroid that grew through the lining of my uterus. Drug induced menopause helped shrink it and then they did the Myomectomy. I immediately got pregnant and had the baby by C-Section.

A few years ago I'd had enough with the scars (and leftover skin) and had an abdomnal plasty. Go figure....

I'm not thrilled about this but it seems to be my only option. I dont mind surgery.... after all I have had enough of it. To be honest the 4 day stay in the hospital isnt something I am looking forward to. Also the idea of not being able to do anything for a month really worries me.

Also... the surgery prior to the Ablation had some complications and I was unable to go to the bathroom (both kinds) and wound up back in hospital after day surgery. When I woke from my Ablation procedure... the first thing I asked to do was to use the facilities.. I was terrified I wouldnt be able to urinate again. Thankfully everything was fine that time.

Any opinions on vert vs horiz? Also has anyone else had problems with urinating? (I've read the posts with helpful hints on BM) The one person I have spoken to about all this in person rather than online apparently had the same problem after her surgery. Mind you hers was a vaginal hysterectomy. I'd welcome any input and all support.

Thanks

Summer

I had a TVH so I can't comment on vertical vs. horizontal, but the foley cath inserted for the surgery sent my bladder into spasms after the spinal wore off and they had to remove it. The only issues I had with urinating was an almost UTI like pain after I would go, but after having read some of the posts by other sisters I knew this was just from the swelling and was OK. The internal swelling still has me going a little more often than before (5-6 x a day vs. 3-4 times a day), but I believe this will get better in time.

Good Luck, & 's

Hi, I had a tah with a bikini line incision. I healed well with only a couple of small complications. I have never had a vertical incision so I can't really compare the two.
I had a catheter for 1 day after my surgery; it was actually nice not having to get up that first day. It was removed the next morning ( didn't hurt at all ) and I had no problems going on my own. I did have a little constipation at first, my dr suggested some meds to help. I was told to drink lots of liquids and eat fiber & it all helped. Please mention your concerns to your dr and do as he/she suggests. Hopefully all will go well for you.

You can find a lot of the commonly used abbreviations here:

Best wishes.
