MRI - why??

I got a call from my GYN and she said that I will probably need a MRI before surgery. I had a CAT scan and an abdominal and trans-vaginal ultrasound. My uterus is enlarged with 2 large fibroids, one I knew about, one that has developed in the last 3 years. Why would they need a MRI ? Wondering what they are looking for, worried because mother had endometrial CA. I am not claustrophobic, had 4 for my neck.

Re: MRI - why??

I would ask her why she wants this. It may be too get better pictures of everything to make sure there isn't something else that they may have missed. Sometimes a CT will miss something that will be picked up by an MRI. But ask her so that you feel more comfortable.

Re: MRI - why??

Different tests can see different things.

I had a ultrasound and an MRI both for my grapefruit-sized complex ovarian cyst and numerous uterine fibroids.

My first test was the ultrasound, which saw the cyst and fibroids. But, since the radiologist could not see the origin of the cyst, he ordered an MRI. The MRI confirmed the diagnosis of the complex ovarian cyst and could find the origin. In addition, the MRI also found more uterine fibroids.

I would not worry too much on this, they just may want to get a better handle on this. I know given your mom's CA that it makes you think. That is natural. Just take this one step at a time, and don't get ahead of your diagnosis.
