It's not just the anesthesia that causes trouble with bowels/bladder. Remember, that's out of your system in a day or two. When you have abdominal surgery, things get "moved around," and many of us have adhesions removed. Especially after the hysterectomy, my bowels and bladder felt bruised for over a month, but they work fine now.

Narcotic drugs like Percoset and Morphine cause constipation. That's another good reason to get off of these drugs as soon as your pain diminishes.

Finally, staying in bed also causes constipation. No matter how much it hurts, get up and walk around as soon as you're cleared to do so.
