Post-Op abdominal hematoma
I'm 20 days post-op from an emergency TAH for uncontrolled cervical bleeding from a leep performed 3 weeks prior. When I was 12 days post-op, I finally gave up on the extreme pain and gas and new bleeding I was experiencing and went to the ER to discover a blood clot the size of a newborn baby's head sitting in my pelvis from a post-op bleed. Guess is that I had been bleeding since surgery and that's why my recovery was so painful and miserable. Now, because of the bleeding issues I was having to require a hyst, I have had numerous clotting tests run and will see the hematologist tomorrow to see if what the results are. I was in the hospital 4 days and had surgery to evacuate the hematoma, received two blood transfusions and lots of IV antibiotics. I am at home now and continue to have a thin, pinkish to red watery discharge. I also am taking 1 lortab every 6 hours and that maintains the pain pretty well. My problem is, I feel like I am just now starting to recover from the hysterectomy like a "normal" person and wondered if anyone else had had a problem like this and how it affected their recovery period.

Re: Post-Op abdominal hematoma
Hi! I had my surgery 8 weeks ago (TAH), and two weeks after being at home, blood began pouring from my incision... Very scary! Wound up in ER, of course. CT confirmed I had an abdominal hematoma, from some bleeding that occurred behind a muscle. There was about a quart of blood in my abdominal cavity. The blood evacuated itself through my incision, so no additional surgery was necessary, but it took until about the 6 week mark for the bleeding to stop. Then came the thin, pinkish, watery discharge. (I thought I was keeping the gauze pad company in business!) My incision is finally healing to the point where there is just a small opening now, and the discharge is slowly subsiding. It took a little longer than expected to start feeling like I was healing normally, but it did eventually happen... so hang in there! It will happen!

Re: Post-Op abdominal hematoma
Hi. My lavh was last day in Aug. I had surgery 2 days later to remove a hematoma on my bladder. After that surgery I was in the hospital 4 days..had a drain, 2 transfusions, round the clock antibiotics by iv..Having the 2nd surgery definitely took a toll on my body - plus I was really anemic afterwards. My recovery was definitely slower than if I just had the lavh. However, I did return to work after 6 weeks.
It took me about 4 months to really feel 'normal' but I'd still have lingering pain, and if I lifted anything or walked too much I'd get swelly-belly big time. Now at 8 mo out I'm noticing this month - any kind of incision pain is gone, and I don't seem to get sore anymore. However, now I have hormone issues. UGH!
Just take things slow and take care of yourself. Be patient. That was hard for me during my recovery. I would get so frustrated by how tired I'd get, or how sore I'd get. Having the one procedure is a big deal, but then having another surgery so close to the first really impacts your body. For my first few weeks home I didn't leave the couch much. I felt a LOT better during week 3. Good luck to you! HUGS!
