Upcoming total abdominal hysterectomy: Return to work after surgery?
I have to advise my boss when I will be back to work (for scheduling purposes)
What is typical time off for a total abdomen hyster. ? I have heard anywhere from 4-8 weeks ..... I will be on light duties....desk mostly...
Thank you!

Re: Upcoming total abdominal hysterectomy: Return to work after surgery?
I had TAH on 10/28. My surgeon told me 6-8 weeks off. My job is somewhat pysical and does require some lifting. I am 3 weeks post-op now and I still cannot be up on my feet/walking for long without pain increasing and feeling exhausted. I ran a quick (like parked right in front of the store and was in there for 5-10 min) errand yesterday and then drove my dtr to a friend's house about 30 minutes away and I was DONE for the day after that. I don't see how I am going to feel ready in three weeks. I am seeing my Dr on 12/10 so we shall see what he says then.
A TAH is a big surgery and everyone seems to heal differently. I would tell your boss 6 weeks since that is about average. I'm sure you could go back early if you feel well enough and your Dr agrees. Good luck with your surgery and recovery!!

Re: Upcoming total abdominal hysterectomy: Return to work after surgery?
I was scheduled for 8 weeks off. My job involves physical and a lot of walking. I think that I needed another month off as I was exhausted and in pain for another 4 weeks. I went back on reduced hours for the first 2 weeks and it still played me out...

Re: Upcoming total abdominal hysterectomy: Return to work after surgery?
It's kind of hard to know in advance. Even women having the same type of surgery - for example, all women having TAHs, or all women having TAHs with a vertical incision, etc. - will experience recovery differently.
Part of the decision involves how you're planning to handle your finances during surgery. If you're going on EI sick benefits, your doc has to certify in advance how long s/he thinks you should be out for. Doctor's certification may also be required if your job comes with paid sick time and/or short-term disability benefits.
My doc referred to six weeks as "standard" and was willing to write me out for that long. I'm not sure he would have been willing to write me out for eight weeks ahead of time. I actually went back at four weeks because my workplace has enough flexibility that coming back early wasn't a problem. However, I should also mention that this happened during the part of the year when my job's only part-time anyway.

Another desk pilot here -- five weeks for me. My surgery was pretty straightforward -- a gigantic fibroid only, no endo, no adeno, no prolapses or cancer concerns.

Re: Upcoming total abdominal hysterectomy: Return to work after surgery?
I'm a programmer, so nothing physical with my job. So I figure I'm going back at 6 weeks. I could have gone back at 5 weeks, but that puts it on Thanksgiving week, so I figure I'll just be out the full 6 weeks. Like BornACrone, my surgery was for fibroids only, so it was pretty straightforward.

Was your surgery abdominal incision? How did you heal? I'm scared that I won't "feel" ready....

I went back after 6 weeks - TAH vertical incision - and I felt fine. Desk work though, nothing physical.

Re: Upcoming total abdominal hysterectomy: Return to work after surgery?
I also have a desk job with no lifting. My doctor told me that I would be off for 4-6 weeks. She was very adament that I should not rush it. I am at 3 1/2 and know that I wouldn't be ready to go back next week if I had to. Fortunately my post-op appointment is not until week 5, therefore I will likely be off for the full 6 weeks and when I return I will work from home 1/2 days for two weeks.
I had a TAH with a vertical incision. The pain at the incisional site has improved, it is still pretty hard and painful on one side. The surgeon told me that it could be because of how tight the knots were tied. I will inquire more about the knots at my post-op appt.
Take care

I have a bikini incision as well as some laparoscopic incisions since that how we started out. I'll be honest, the first two weeks I was sure I was never going to feel better. Right around two weeks post-op I started to feel much stronger. At almost 5 weeks now I feel pretty normal
